I kind of loved Rogue One.
It had a slow build and the characters didn't have detailed backstories (which isn't really a fair criticism for this movie because this is a plot driven movie not character driven
and everyone dies anyway so we're never going to see 're again
) and the comic relief was a bit out of place at times and there were a couple of minor plot contrivancesbut this was a super solid Star Wars movie, both more reverent of the franchise and less pandering to fans than TFAand also a LOT less of a retreadbut some of that was in here too.
As far as the slow build, I didn't mind it. It gave us time to spend in a familiar "world" getting to know mostly new characters that were interesting to travel the universe with for a couple hours. The nods to the OT weren't too in your faceI'm sure I missed a bunch which will be rectified with my inevitable repeat viewings of which I'm sure there will be manyand helped to add to the SW feel being nearly absent of all the major characters.
But the slow build paid off so big with an epic battle scene complete with AT-ATs, TIE fighters, Star Destroyers, X-Wings, etc I almost felt like a six year old me watching the trench run for the first time.
But this battle did feel like a bit of a retread of the third act of Jedi with the three pronged battle and the whole shield thingonly with far superior special effects and less upbeat conclusion.
But the conclusion of this battle had a great impact. The weight of the sacrifice made in this movie not only adds to the overall impact in story but it also gives greater insight to the actions of the Rebel Alliance and SW lore in general, something a spinoff needs to do. I'm not into the EU stuff, but I'm sure Jeda comes up in there and it's history could spawn it's own series. So it detailed things we knew about and introduced things that could be expanded upon.
    The appearance of two characters,
    Tarkin and Leia
, was at once geekgasm inducing and confounding. It was a huge technological feat to get them in there almost seamlesslybut the almost bit made it also a little distracting. The Last scene was so brief for this not to be much of a factor, but
    Tarkin
was kind of a significant character and it workedmostly.
Darth Vader's presence was initially a pretty cool throw away cameo, but turned into one of the, if not the, highlights of the film.
This movie ends basically where A New Hope starts. We get to see Darth Vader appear in the red glow of his light saber at the end of a darkened corridor lined with rebel fighters. What follows is basically about a minute of Darth Vader being the baddest of bad asses in film history, something pretty much heretofore never seen.
This may have been one of the things that were incorporated after the movie was reworked to lighten that downer of an ending and if so, it did it's job.
I haven't walked out of a theater feeling this satisfied in a LONG time. I heard a reviewer say this was the best Star Wars movie period. And I have to wonder if I could have seen this with the less critical eyes of the six year old meI might say that. There's no way to know. Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope) is still my favorite SW movie. Rogue One is easily my favorite non-OT SW film but I haven't settled on a place for it beyond that.
    tl;dr:
This is the first must see SW movie since Jedi. Despite the darker tone, it leads into Episode IV excellently and I can picture watching this before the OT in future marathon sessions; except for the OT, I've never seen any SW movie more than once all the way through If you are a SW fan, then you need to see this movie. Nothing else needs to be said on the subject.
According to me, yes. I am the person it's usually according to when I'm talking.

I loved the movie as well. It's the darkest Star Wars movie but it fits pretty well in the mood.
Thank God they scrapped most of Gareth Edwards original ideas.
Gareth Edwards is a terrible movie director and he was responsible for the atrocious Snoozilla 2014.

Never saw any of Edwards previous movies, heard good things though. I can't imagine his contributions were entirely wiped away. It's interesting that a movie that went through so many alterations so late in the game turned out so well. I'm curious to see the Edwards cut just to contrast the two

You've only heard good things about his movies? You should research a bit more. There's a lot of hatred towards them.
Edwards cut version probably only has action off-screen. The guy is nuts.

It's a movie about redemption, Harry.
Can't you extend that toward Gareth Edwards?
            Just this once?

I wasted hours and hours of my precious life in the cinema to watch Snoozilla 2014!!!

Well, like I said elsewhere, Menace isn't the worst by far, epsically if you get past Ani and Jar Jar. It's certainly more kid friendly. I was 17 when it came out, so that didn't help it.
                AotC is pretty awful though

The Phantom Menace is factually the worst Star Wars movie ever.
Revenge of the Sith is an amazing movie and factually the best of the prequels by far.

Honestly, I enjoyed the first two acts more than the big battle.
The heroes of Rogue One are mostly trashy people with the exception of Donnie Yen. People respond a certain way to Cassian, but really he's the rebellion's assassin. Cassian has all the traits of a villain, which is a stark contrast to what we are used to.
                    And I like that.
It's a legitimate rebellion where the clean senate people have to talk to lowlives and gather them toward a common goal. It basically boosts the reputation of Luke Skywalker, who becomes this mythic figure that everyone looks up to and wants to follow into battle.
I guess that's why Jeyn's stilted speech didn't bother me so much because it needed to happen. These galactic jerks that all hate each other needed someone to be a leader for once.

I can't say I enjoyed the first two acts morebut if they weren't as solid as they were, I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed the third act as much as I did. It would have been about as exciting as the opening of Attack of the Clones, while cool to look at when it was released, I didn't really give a fck.
The protagonist couldn't be untarnished heroes
                      considering their fate
. I liked all of them though. I couldn't find any major faults with the film and was so thoroughly entertained that the minor ones didn't detract
beyond that guy's idiot wife in the first segment
                      .
But good points. I just saw it this morning and haven't stopped thinking about it much. The fact that it actually adds to the overall SW story is pretty great. I honestly didn't think they were going to be able to pull something like this off so well. I hope this bodes well for Episode VIII because Episode VII wasunderwhelming, but still left me hopeful for it's sequels.
According to me, yes. I am the person it's usually according to when I'm talking.

Rogue One is easily my favorite non-OT SW film but I haven't settled on a place for it beyond that
                        For me it goes:
                        Empire Strikes Back
                        A New Hope
                        Rouge One
                        Force Awakens
                        Jedi
                        We won't acknowledge the prequels.

For me (tentatively regarding Rogue One):
                              A New Hope
                              Empire/Jedi
                              Rogue One
                              The Force Awakens
                              Revenge of the Sith
Jedi's first and third act a far superior to Empire and Empire doesn't really have an ending. Sure the second act of Jedi may be the weakest of the OT, but I still love it.
And I honestly remember enjoying Revenge of the Sith OKbut I'm sure it was based on the lowered expectations left by the previous two prequels. I still haven't bothered to rewatch it since seeing it in the theater though
According to me, yes. I am the person it's usually according to when I'm talking.

If Sith were the worst of the prequels, it'd make for a pretty good trilogy. Unfortunately it's the best of them.

Anyone who considers ROTJ better than ROTS is without a doubt a sheep. That movie was mediocre as hell save for the ending scenes with Luke, Vader, and Sidious.
