I loved the movie as well. It's the darkest Star Wars movie but it fits pretty well in the mood.
Thank God they scrapped most of Gareth Edwards original ideas.
Gareth Edwards is a terrible movie director and he was responsible for the atrocious Snoozilla 2014.

Never saw any of Edwards previous movies, heard good things though. I can't imagine his contributions were entirely wiped away. It's interesting that a movie that went through so many alterations so late in the game turned out so well. I'm curious to see the Edwards cut just to contrast the two

You've only heard good things about his movies? You should research a bit more. There's a lot of hatred towards them.
Edwards cut version probably only has action off-screen. The guy is nuts.

Well, like I said elsewhere, Menace isn't the worst by far, epsically if you get past Ani and Jar Jar. It's certainly more kid friendly. I was 17 when it came out, so that didn't help it.
AotC is pretty awful though

Honestly, I enjoyed the first two acts more than the big battle.
The heroes of Rogue One are mostly trashy people with the exception of Donnie Yen. People respond a certain way to Cassian, but really he's the rebellion's assassin. Cassian has all the traits of a villain, which is a stark contrast to what we are used to.
And I like that.
It's a legitimate rebellion where the clean senate people have to talk to lowlives and gather them toward a common goal. It basically boosts the reputation of Luke Skywalker, who becomes this mythic figure that everyone looks up to and wants to follow into battle.
I guess that's why Jeyn's stilted speech didn't bother me so much because it needed to happen. These galactic jerks that all hate each other needed someone to be a leader for once. -

I can't say I enjoyed the first two acts morebut if they weren't as solid as they were, I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed the third act as much as I did. It would have been about as exciting as the opening of Attack of the Clones, while cool to look at when it was released, I didn't really give a fck.
The protagonist couldn't be untarnished heroes
considering their fate
. I liked all of them though. I couldn't find any major faults with the film and was so thoroughly entertained that the minor ones didn't detract
beyond that guy's idiot wife in the first segment
.
But good points. I just saw it this morning and haven't stopped thinking about it much. The fact that it actually adds to the overall SW story is pretty great. I honestly didn't think they were going to be able to pull something like this off so well. I hope this bodes well for Episode VIII because Episode VII wasunderwhelming, but still left me hopeful for it's sequels.

Rogue One is easily my favorite non-OT SW film but I haven't settled on a place for it beyond that
For me it goes:
Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Rouge One
Force Awakens
Jedi
We won't acknowledge the prequels.

For me (tentatively regarding Rogue One):
A New Hope
Empire/Jedi
Rogue One
The Force Awakens
Revenge of the Sith
Jedi's first and third act a far superior to Empire and Empire doesn't really have an ending. Sure the second act of Jedi may be the weakest of the OT, but I still love it.
And I honestly remember enjoying Revenge of the Sith OKbut I'm sure it was based on the lowered expectations left by the previous two prequels. I still haven't bothered to rewatch it since seeing it in the theater though
