The movies is a bit open ended about that, but I think the most prevalent theory is that:
Willie shot him with a 22. Then Zipper arrived, stole the $5,000, and staged the shotgun suicide scene to avoid a murder investigation. He later bought a new Electra Glide with the money.
Do you agree?
BTW, the only version I have ever seen is where Wintergreen gets blown off his bike. Such a sad, ironic, and poignant ending.
BTW, a vulture flies overhead, and they freeze the scene when he is over Wintergreen. A moment of serendipity for the director apparently, and that's why he freezes the scene at that point. A really sharp poster on MC spotted that.
MAGA! FAFO!

That makes sense and is revealed at the end, yet just the single killing aspect, it was
Willie that still shot him.
Zipper just got
opportunistic after the fact.
Stunning directorial debut. I was blown away, pardon the pun, the first time I saw it. I think there are some editing/presentation issues in parts, but these are negligible. One of the best films of the year from 1973.

The film would be a tad esoteric for regular mainstream tastes. Those that appreciate original and intelligent film-making needn't look any further than EGIB.
Diminutive Blake holds it all together and the support cast is exceptionally solid too.

The vhs contained an extra close up Wintergreen's demise by shotgun
, gory Peckinpah style. It was cut to obtain a PG rating, which was still pushing the boundary. The fate of our tiny hero has always been the same.

On IMDB, it was apparently known as
The Legend Of Big John
upon a reissue. It doesn't mention this title, which is ludicrous. Both are. It does look like an authentic US movie poster.
