I'm not sure a meth addict whose brain has holes in it from snorting mystery powders her whole life can be trusted to give an accurate description of what empathy is
but I don't see how your description conflicts with his. maybe it comes more naturally to some than others who have to make an effort to exercise it but it's same thing either way.

It's worth realizing there's some things he probably said to be antagonistic because that's what drives engagement and gets people interested.
Or the 10 year old daughter rape thing. I'm not going to put words in a dead man's mouth, but the context for that was him debating a group of people who were trying to find the limit or endpoint to his pro-life stance, and he must have recognized if he backed off on that example then the whole thing falls apart. Or maybe he meant it, but it seems more about not giving up ground in the debate than some firmly held belief.
