Spinoza is one of my favorite philosophers of all time. I was a Spinozist for like 2 years. I think there could be an amended form of Spinozism. Deleuze already did this, but I never fully accepted his version. I guess the only problem with Spinozas form of monism would be the degree of which human reasoning would be a mode of the attribute of Thought but still determined by Substance itself rather than autonomous "self determining" like in Hegel. You could still grant reason autonomy even as an aspect of Substance, but then the determining power of Substance over the modes is compromised.
I like his philosophy a lot more than Hegels, it's more clear and elegant, but it just kind of seems like reason gets swamped by Substance.

I've always meant to read Spinoza more closely, but never got around to it. A lot people I admire seem to like him, so I should probably get on with it!

If I could resurrect one philosopher from the dead to have a conversation with, it would be Spinoza.
He isn't as emphasized as Descartes and Kant, but just as important. Almost the first real atheist philosopher and indirectly played a huge part in the development of modernity through his influence on other thinkers.
A Book Forged in Hell: Spinoza's Scandalous Treatise and the Birth of the Secular Age by
Steven Nadler demonstrates how important Spinoza is for us.
There has been a "Spinoza resurgence" in the last 40 years or so but he's always been seen as kind of a smaller figure than Descartes in the history of philosophy. I think he was actually much better and more consistent than Descartes and just as important, not less.

I almost bought a book on Spinoza and Leibniz yesterday (forget the name), but it would just join the huge collection of books that are piled up and that I haven't read, so I exercised free will and didn't buy it. My wife has threatened to leave me if I don't stop buying books.
I will take a look at old Baruch later.

Throwing poop and rape are also natural parts of the animal kingdom and are not diseases.

You have a good speaking voice. Good enough to even broadcast with. I would know.

Thanks Steve! It would be fun to start a podcast some day. There would be a lot to talk about.

The appeal to nature is just retarded. Poop throwing and rape are both naturally occurring social behaviors.

behaviour in nature is suitable for humans.

Nope. It was a selective move, blocking the claim that homosexuality is unnatural.
Slashie says being gay is unnatural.
Patrick says animals display gay behaviour (therefore it is natural).
Slashie says that Patrick claims all animal behaviour is human behaviour.
                                    Not a syllogism at all.

He was citing a specific slashie who argued that both homosexuals and transgender persons suffered from a disease. If you want to distance yourself from that, well and good.
