The 500,000 figure includes families, so it involves more than 500,000 individuals. Even if it were just 500,000 people, that is only one year. Over ten years that's 5 million people. About 3 million of that would be due to medical expenses, or about 1% of the total US population filing for bankruptcy due to medical debt over a ten year period.
Considering most Americans are not facing major medical issues at any given time, this 1% figure actually represents a much greater percent of those who have medical bills to pay. And this is only bankruptcy we're talking about. This does not account for those who don't file for bankruptcy but who still struggle to pay their medical bills. The unavoidable fact is, we have a health care system in this country that leaves millions of Americans struggling financially. They don't have this in countries with universal health care, which was the whole point.
