He got HIV which is the virus that causes AIDS and it’s possible he didn’t develop full blown AIDS until much later in his life and eventually died from something other than the disease.
Apparently he wasn’t diagnosed until 1985. Incubation period can be of a few months to a year so he could’ve contracted the virus shortly before 85. It can take a whole decade before an HIV infection becomes AIDS.

You have the bug?
TheGhost
aka PAGG is absolutely right, and you have no idea.
An interesting article on the current state of research:

No. And I happen to be one of those old school gay guys who’s still very much afraid of catching the virus.
I’m 42 and I still remember a time when this disease was a death sentence and remember all the suffering and fear it caused in the 80s and 90s.

The proportion of men and women who are HIV-positive is roughly equal.
Unfortunately, many still think that HIV or then AIDS affects almost exclusively gay men.
A fatal misconception. -

I’m well aware of that fact. The reason I emphasized that as a gay male I’m very much afraid of the virus it’s because of the new mentality that PreP serves as some sort of immunity against the virus and an invitation to unprotected anal sex.

Yah, some people are frighteningly ignorant and careless.
Extreme panic ruins the joy of life, but are we able to trust the fidelity of our partner?
Rhetorical question…of course not.
According to the
AIDS report
back then about 50% of all people who live monogamously have sexual intercourse outside of their relationship within 5 years.
These are just boring numbers. Old movies are sometimes more successful.
La Ronde (1950)
We've steadily rising numbers of syphilis infections here, still today no joke sickness.
If you can then illustrate with a movie like this that everyone was actually having sex with each other in
La Ronde
, leastwise some few more start to think. -

Some people responded differently to the virus, like Cleve Jones who is still alive:
while he first learned of his status when tests for infection came out in the 1980s, he was likely infected with the virus around the winter of 1978 or 1979, based on blood samples collected from him as part of a study he volunteered for. -
