Halloween has never been afraid of a restart or to simply try something new. Its tried the "restart" a few times now.
Halloween 4 took it in another direction - due to not having Jamie Lee Curtis - and made Jamie the focus. It would later evolve into The Thorn Trilogy.
H20 was pretty much what Halloween 2018 is now - creating a new part 2 and timeline.
My question is which of it do you like? I don't like every movie in the series, but I do like many of them. We're fortunate enough - as Myers fans - to have a few different continuities.
I was not a fan of the Thorn concept. I appreciate they were trying to add something fresh and new to the series, but it's a perfect example of less is more. The more it showed us, the worse it got.
But 4 is a decent movie. It implied there's something going on (a curse so to speak) with that ending, but didn't reveal much and that worked better than the full blown Thorn unveiling. Plus, 4 was just a better movie. Better acting, action, and story than 5, 5, and Halloween Busta Rhymes. 1, 2, and 4 is a trilogy to me. It works surprisingly well together considering 4 doesn't have a ton of direct ties to 1 or 2.
Then H20 came along. It was the first attempt at ignoring the ****ty middle movies and making Laurie into an older woman who was scarred by her past, but attempts to fight back. Aside from the dated 90s feel, I always enjoyed this movie. It's a solid ending too. Resurrection does not exist. It adds nothing to the story and H20 was a good ending to the "siblings" continuity/storyline.
Then 2018 came along. It breathed new life into the franchise.It was a new part 2. I like part 2. I like part 2 a lot. But after years of mostly bad movies, I was fine with a new direction. I lended up liking this movie a lot. I hated Kills, but am willing to wait for the next one to to see if this version will end at 2018 for me or Ends can revive my interest in this new timeline. -

I do not care for this franchise.
Here is my take on it though.
It does not follow any consistent timeline through all the years of it and certain movies will be in a series while others will be standalone films which separates them from the pack.
The only things they have in common is there is a psycho killer who may or may not be immortal, depending on the film, who wears a Will Shatner mask walking around stabbing to death residents on H.Ween and he has a sister who also does not follow along with any particular timeline of these movies.
The only things that matter is the bro and sis characters and the name.
Does that sum it all up?

This seems to be the new trend in franchise movies where it never was before.
They always followed a timeline.
Now they make new ones that do not follow along with anything and it creates this clusterfuck of confusion of what is supposed to be the right ones or not.
Alien and Terminator do this.
I guess the only thing that matters or what they care about is having action with violence to deliver to satisfy the audience and don't give a damn at all if this fictitious world crumbles in a heap of confusion and bullshit.

If anything the Friday the 13th franchise was the first to start this moronic trend when they decided to just do what the comics did and just ignore all the previous movies and write the film in question as some sort of alternate one shot story. This began with Jason Goes to Hell as that's when the franchise just threw continuity out of the window. Then they did it again in Jason X, did a weird sequel but historic retcon in Freddy vs Jason, etc.
Then the X-men really made it mainstream to make continuity as confusing as possible.
Then it was around Rocky Balboa, Rambo and Fast and Furious (4th movie) when Hollywood decided to make titles confusing too.
Now Hollywood movies with messy continuity and confusing titles that make it sound like the original movie are a dime a dozen now. -

You don't have to explain it if you know because I lose interest in it at that point.

What's both hilarious and sad is that the Deadpool movies, the parody character's films, have a more solid grasp on continuity and even help give a explanation why some films are non canon anymore like when Deadpool went back in time to erase the events of Wolverine Origins to get rid of Barakapool.

Ugh it was worse than that as everything after Ft13 part 8 was the poster child of the comics in the "we don't care about continuity and the previous films" category.
Jason Goes to Hell -
What Jason's dead in the sewers of NYC? Screw that! He's magically back alive in camp crystal lake again mysteriously, and he'll inherit a new heart worm power that never remotely existed in the previous movies. While we're rewriting his backstory, we'll further rewrite more of his backstory by giving him a completely new family tree that was never mentioned at all, as it always came off as Jason and his mom as the only Vorhees family members, to bring even more stupidity to the franchise.

What happened in the previous movies? Yeah I don't care. Jason is magically alive again and this time we're putting him in space because… well Leprechaun went into space, so we can do it too!
Freddy vs Jason -
Well Jason Goes to Hell teased Freddy Kruger so I'm going to make it happen. Wait what is this about new Jason origins and powers? Yeah I don't care as I didn't actually watched Jason Goes to Hell nor even want to know now, I grew up with vague memories of the original films, so I'm just going to use them instead. -

I find myself watching them out of a morbid curiosity and, like you, also prefer continuity etc even though it is a fictitious world.
Wasn't there a Friday where FBI agents entrap using, as always, a good looking bimbo as bait then shoot him to death and a black coroner for some dumb reason takes a bite out of his heart then HE becomes Jason?
I think I may have stopped watching at that point because that got really dumb.
I dunno what happened after that but there should only one Jason and that is the original kid that drowned.

Same here. I only watched those terrible movies both because I was encountering numerous annoying Jason fanboys who thought bad filmmaking is evidence of superpowers and because back when Spike TV use to exist, they would do marathons of the Ft13 films.
Yes there's quite a population of annoying Jason fanboys out there who legit thinks bad filmmaking and massive internet myths/misconceptions equate superpowers. I'm sure everyone and their mom is familiar with the laughable slasher trope of the killer who's moving at a snails pace magically catching up to victims who are running around the place as a obvious sign of bad filmmaking. Not Jason fanboys however who thinks it's evidence of Jason having teleportation powers! They also think he has a healing factor because "dah, Jason keeps on coming back alive, therefore he must have Wolverine style healing factor!" Um no. The Ft13 films all the way to part 8 actually shows or explains quite blatantly how Jason survives or comes back alive, and none of it has anything to do with a supposed healing factor. That's just a massive misconception from idiots who either never actually watched the movies, have a bad memory of them or blatantly blind fanboys. Actually the films show the complete opposite of a healing factor because when Jason came back in part 6, his face and body would progressively deteriorate after each film to looking more skeletal and rotting.
I guess we should be lucky there was never a Jason film so bad that the sound goes out of sync or the image starts breaking up. Otherwise Jason fanboys would claim that's evidence Jason has reality manipulation powers!

That was Jason Goes to Hell, the one that came after part 8/Jason takes Manhattan, and you were right to stop watching after that idiocy because that was when the franchise took a page from the comics and just went "dah, screw continuity. I'm just going to make up whatever the hell I want and not even care what happened in the previous movies".
It actually gets more stupid after that point if you can believe it. The film completely rewrite's Jason's entire family tree because now Jason has sisters and nieces and other relatives that were never hinted to have existed until that film then proceed not to exist again in the later films. The real stupid part was that the film established if Jason's body gets destroyed, he can get it back if his stupid heart worm thingy that never existed before jumps up the vagina of a Vorhees woman then it would magically transforms back into Jason's body complete with the hockey mask. The film does more stupid changes by trying to claim no one besides another Vorhees can kill Jason despite he's been killed a bunch of times in the previous films and there was no other Vorhees family members in them beside Jason and his dead mom. Needlessly to say the annoying Jason fanboys I've encountered tried to do more fanwanking of Jason to make the claim that no one can kill Jason beside other members of his family despite me pointing out Jason's lifeless body been at the bottom of a lake for over 10 years in more than one occasion. Guess Jason just likes chilling at the bottom of lakes for many years and just coincidentally got back up when electricity hit his body or when a psychic girl mistaken Jason for her dad. -

Yeah, it gets out of control and ridiculous with the more movies they make and the more they move away from the origins.
It drives me kinda nuts when they do that with Superman's background they would change all the time in comic books.
All of a sudden there is a "Supergirl," and I think he may have had super animals like a horse, cat and dog that could fly.
They also add in that he knew Lex Luthor when they were kids and Lex wants revenge because Supes made him go bald with a bad chemical reaction.
Really? That is why Lex is an enemy of Supes and not because Supes always foils his plans for worldwide domination?
It just goes from there and gets more and more nuts when they add in newer story lines that don't make sense and goes farther away as they keep on manipulating the origins.
Another thing I noticed about the Jason, Freddy and Mike monster horror movies is that they are always going after young boys and girls from their late teens into their early 20s.
Sure, they might slaughter a middle aged or elderly person here or there but if they really want to take out the most targets at once why not just go into a rest home?
Easy pickens to get the most revenge for them in a place like that!
How is it that young good looking kids in shape are always their targets?

People say this now, but I don't see it this way. People conceptualized this idea decades after the movie. It was never official.
Nurse Marion says she took care of Dr. Loomis until his death. If H20 ignores 4-6, then they would have gone with Loomis's dying in Halloween II. They didn't because we know Loomis is alive in 4-6.
Laurie Strode died in a car accident in Halloween 4. In H20, we see the article that Laurie Strode faked her death in a car accident. Obviously this is the car accident we hear about in Part 4.
H20 doesn't retcon from II. It just doesn't mention the events of 4-6 nor Jamie but that doesn't mean they didn't happen.
Aside from the dated 90s feel,
I hated the visuals of H20. It looks like Dawson's Creek with Michael Myers. The movie poster looks like I Know What You Did Last Summer. I get Urban Legends vibes too. You are right, total 90s look; it has that generic 90s teen glow cinematography lol, like a CW series.
I hated Kills, but am willing to wait for the next one to to see if this version
What was the point of ignoring all the sequels if they're right back to square one: making Michael a superhuman force again and adding comic relief which doesn't fit in with a Halloween movie? If they're going to redo Halloween II, they have a burden to be that much better than it. Kills was fun, but it was no different take than any sequel prior.

I tend to agree with the one big timeline. I think it is possible to tie all the first 8 films together into one big narrative for many of the reasons you mention above because fear of what would happen if she went back in 1988 would be a motivating force for Laurie there.

Wait, why can Loomis survive in part 4's continuity, but not H20s? If 4 said he survived the explosion, there's no reason he can't survive between 2 and H20.
I'm not back at square one, I have many continuities to enjoy as a Halloween fan.

Well here's the thing:
Part II was meant to kill off Michael and Loomis for good. Their deaths were not left open-ended. Part II was originally meant to be the last Myers movie.
Part IV comes. The studio wants to bring back Michael and Loomis. But they died? Oh well no problem - just write that they survived the explosion.
H20: The actor who played Loomis had already passed away in real life at this point. So it was impossible for him to reprise his role. Thus, if H20 continues directly from Halloween II like a lot of people say, and I argue it doesn't, there would be no real reason to say Loomis survived that explosion if that character cannot return anyway.
