Republicans, supposedly the party of Lincoln, repeatedly downplay the conditions slaves had to live under. A Republican president is ordering federal parks to remove any mention of slavery.

Not exactly. The Democrats used to have a big tent with room for southern racists and big government. The Civil Rights Act just guaranteed the southern racist part of the party would leave the tent.
Also both parties used to have a lot more room for conservative Democrats or liberal Republicans. That's all long gone.
