Democrats, the party of slavery, are the ones trying to remove statues of Confederate generals, who fought to keep slavery in place.
Republicans, supposedly the party of Lincoln, repeatedly downplay the conditions slaves had to live under. A Republican president is ordering federal parks to remove any mention of slavery.

Nobody's downplaying the conditions slaves had to live under. And yes, Democrats all if a sudden wanted to take down those statues just 5 minutes ago, not so much when the supposed "switch" happened, but decades later when it was politically advantageous during the BLM riots. Not exactly. The Democrats used to have a big tent with room for southern racists and big government. The Civil Rights Act just guaranteed the southern racist part of the party would leave the tent.
Also both parties used to have a lot more room for conservative Democrats or liberal Republicans. That's all long gone.
