There's that, and there's also the fact that there aren't many good movies being made right now and no one wants to waste money going to see them at the cinema. Given another film like 2001, or The Godfather for example, I'm pretty sure people would be happy to pay to see them.

His point is that films like the ones you mentioned are a box office gamble.
The Godfather and 2001 were surprise hits. Godfather II even flopped. No one can guarantee a good film of original characters, that's low budget, can a hit.
A Marvel movie or a monster movie of an already-established character, film adaptations of popular literature, or a reboot/sequel of an established popular character are guaranteed hits.

Cinema isn't really dead, the term home cinema is more of a cultural thing now, and Damon is now aged and no longer the drawcard he was. He seems disappointed that he's not making the same profits by the sound of it. This happens to most stars as they get older.
