mainstream music is the worst. but because of the smaller investment, you'll also find better music if you really look for it, since there is more of it. music can be more independent as a result.
movies are a larger investment, so they do need to cater to a larger audience and aren't always total subversive mind-control. however, movies are almost never free of nonsense because of all the cooks in the kitchen.
i'd say mainstream television is almost as bad or worse than modern mainstream music.

Outside of Hollywood there are still good independent and foreign films being made. Likewise, there's still good music to be found.
