i love her acting, but i'm not certain of how much of it was acting and how much of it was her state of mind at the time. her snappy one-liners are legendary and whose delivery she was almost without peer. she put everything of her into her performances and imo was a hugely underrated screen actress.
and yes, she was intelligent, more than people give her credit for. i posted recently about the books she read and liked:

i've read Madame Bovary which is one of fav novels ever, Death in Venice and The Great Gatsby, both in class in high school. lol i will start The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner soon, but that's alll
so yep, i recommend Madame Bovary. it's an all time classic which has its followers but also its haters lol haters say it's boring and the title character is unlikable, but i disagree whole-heartedly! Emma Bovary is one of the greatest female literary characters of all time. well, imo lol

yeah there are several movie adaptations of Madame Bovary. i've only seen the Chabrol version from the 1990's with Isabelle Huppert and the Renoir version from the 1930's. there's a newer version with Mia Wasikowska, Ezra Miller and Rhys Ifans (

's boo) but i've yet to see that one.

very true. it was like that back then and it is still like that today bc our patriarchal society says beautiful hot sexual sensual women can't be smart! many men are straight up terrified of beautiful successful women who are also intelligent, so they gotta talk them down.

she definitely got depressed by the world and its people, yes. as a product of her time (misogyny of 1950's America) she was treated poorly throughout her life and when she became famous, her public image as a bimbo and sex symbol who was having affairs with JFK and other powerful men, didnt help either and wore her out mentally. she was also on drugs and alcohol and suffered from insmonia so she probably just got tired of it all.
