Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jennifer Connelly

For me, it would have to be Etoile. You haven't seen Etoile until you've seen a DVD of it. It's simply gorgeous to look at and definitely not as 'style-less' as some people have said. I feel like the VHS version that most people saw diminishes the beautiful cinematography and causes them to be more critical of the film's flaws. Also, a lot of people judge it as a horror film rather than a FANTASY film. It is no doubt flawed; too much time is spent on Gary McCleery's character and the story is a bit vague but it is so full of atmosphere and wonderful moments that I can't help but love it. The epic finale is probably my favourite moment.
So what are some Jennifer Connelly movies that you find to be very under-appreciated?

I watched Etoile late at night while up sick with a fever unable to sleep, and it was super trippy. I totally lost it when the live swan showed up. Good times. Certainly under rated. A bit earlier on that same sick day I watched Far Harbor, and the movie was pretty inane on the whole, but super underrated as far as Jennifer goes, she gives (at the time like 1996) possibly the best performance of her career up to that point. She totally carried that entire film, both with her performance and her character was written to be pretty much the only interesting one. Spoiler:
I loved that she put Fricks name on her screenplay and rowed out herself to that yacht to get it to that big time producer. That was one of the best endings to an otherwise bad film I've ever seen
To me the most underrated Jennifer Connelly film is Creation. I for some reason just love that film. The scene where Charles comes back from Worcester Road and they have a fight and he follows her through the house, and then their confrontation in her dressing room was brilliant. Other than that I'm not sure why I like it so much.
Blood Diamond is also a bit underrated, I thought it would have been a bigger hit than it was, instead I think it quietly made its money back overseas. Though I think Jennifer's role could have been written better in it, they use her too much for obvious exposition.
Jennifer Connelly in Little Children was underrated by her own director who apparently cut a large number of her scenes during editing. (And then didn't include them on the DVD, do these companies not understand the point of DVDs? We want lots of special features damn it! Otherwise I'll just download if they can't be bothered with good special features.) The scenes Jennifer did have in that film she totally stole, so good with subtext!
Virginia also was not nearly as terrible as everyone seemed to think. And Jennifer gave an award worthy leading performance. She showed a side of her range we'd never seen from her before. I hope she knows that and wasn't discouraged in any way by the dismal reception by critics and the box office, and will take that kind of character risk again.
Anyway this was long, (mostly because i am sitting awake waiting for Jimmy Kimmel to come on since Jennifer is a guest tonight)

I would say Dark Water. I really liked that movie. I know a lot of people didn't but i did and i thought she played that role perfectly.

I love her performance in Dark Water as well, she absolutely knocked it out of the park in that one. She was amazing in it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Dark Water. She was excellent in it. That movies biggest flaw wasn't the film itself, but the marketing, everyone thought they were going to see a horror film, and it wasn't that. It was really a Japanese horror film remade into a character drama.
They totally botched the promotion for the film, it should have been renamed, had a differently cut trailer, and in interviews they clearly told Jennifer to play up the scary aspects of it, which set the film up to fail by getting the wrong people out to see it.
She hasn't really gotten too many solidly lead roles since that one. Which is a shame as she can really carry a film.

Dark City she's stunning not to mention her showing off her beautiful voice.

if you are talking about the scene where she sings at the bar, that's not her real voice, the singers name is anita kelsey, but, there is a version in youtube in wich you can hear jennifer singing on that scene.director Alex Proyas decided to cut the audio and select anit'as voice instead. jennifer's singing is not that bad on the original scene but i rather seeing her as an actreess i guess

The DVD that I have has Jennifer singing, (I think it's the directors cut) and for many other reasons it is by far the better version, they got rid of most of the voice over stuff that was ruining the theatrical version, and added in some scenes, and just all around made the film stronger.
Even though the dubbed singer from the theatrical release is technically a better singer, I like the scenes better with Jennifer's voice because it fits the character and the mood of the scenes and setting better. Jennifer being a talented actress obviously sang it in a way that fit the film, whereas the singer just sang it from the point of view of just singing the song really well.
Dark City is a great film, but also in looking at Jennifer's career is important because it's one of the films where she really starts coming into her own talent wise.

I kind of like The Heart of Justice. The dialogue and acting is very B-grade but it's great seeing Jennifer Connelly play a villain (even better that she was the only actor who actually gave a good performance).

Yeah, it's a shame she hasn't portrayed a villain more, she'd make a good one. I bet she could be downright terrifying in the right role.

Considering it was nominated for 3 Oscars and a Golden Globe, I don't think that one counts as underrated.
