Can Mel Gibson ever be redeemed?

I love Mel (as far as acting/directing) and I wish he could make a comeback. But the difference between Mel and RDJ is that when RDJ screwed up he didn't make racial comments (afaik). Redemption will be much harder, if not impossible, for Mel.

No one is perfect, and for god's sake, it's been 7 years now. His friends and a million other people forgive him. Time to forgive and move on. He has NEVER treated anyone different. Underneath it all, he's a good man.

I agree mostly. Anyone who's lived long enough gets this, especially around people with substance problems. He without sin
It doesn't make what he did "okay" or "admirable" ffs, but I think he's kind of been punished long enough.
I always separate the creator from the art in these cases, anyway. I say just let the guy make some damn movies before he's dead. People will either pony up or won't. I think a lot of people would. -

no, he's a horrible person for the things he said to his ex girlfriend. he'll never be in a big movie ever again. does't look like you were right as it's now been 4 years since you posted that and he still hasn't been in a big movie since before he made those antisemitic remarks.

he was actually very drunk when he said what was on those tapes. He's actually not racist or sexist at all in real life
Like they say, a persons true nature or beliefs can come to the fore when drunk, angry or both. As for Gibson being racist and sexist, and those that point fingers at him for being these things, are just as likely closet racists and sexist themselves. They don't have the guts to say what they really think though and then project their own insecurities and hypocritical attitudes onto others. They are just looking for a scapegoat to hide behind, so they can look and feel better about themselves.

This is one of the biggest myths on the planet. Not true at all. I could write book on how wrong that is but don't have time. Drunk people lie like dogs. I know one personally. Can't trust a thing they say.
A myth according to who? You! Your experiences don't amass to things being set in stone and not the only way things are. Please don't write your book, it would be self-absorbed, rather than absorbing.
Behind Mel's madness, there is also an extremely talented and creative individual who has a lot to say and he is not afraid to express it either. He is also a privileged and lucky human being and others look up them as being role models, that is why if one is revered, they need to act in a manner that is worthy of that respect. We all have our foibles though and things can also be forgiven. This is what Christ represented, and Gibson being relgious Catholic can also be a hypocrite as well. If he shoots himself in the foot, he will just have to wear any consequence, be it justified or not.

Think about it logically. If alcohol was such an effective truth serum, why aren't we getting witnesses and defendants drunk before they take the stand?
And keep in mind that that Mr Gibson has a bipolar disorder and is an alcoholic, both of those mess with the mind and alcoholism with the brain chemistry.
I prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially as he has been remorseful. Hasn't his punishment gone on long enough by now?
And by the way, I can say really spiteful untrue things if i'm a bit to drunk and someone I love hurts my feelings. So you don't even need to be an alcoholic or have a bipolar disorder to lie when drunk. -

He's been remorseful? Can't say I've heard him apologize for anything.
He's a drunk, a holocaust denier, an anti-Semite, a producer of gratuitous violence and torture porn, a serial adulterer, and a man who has been abusive to his former partner and is about to have an illegitimate child.
No one is perfect, but let's get real here: he claims to be a devout Catholic, but it's his wealth, power and celebrity that entitles him to speak and behave like a lowlife bum.
I do not respect him, I do not like him and I do not forgive him. -

except anee08Gibson DID apologize for his actions not just once but over and over and over again. How many apologies does one man need to make ? Anyways He doesn't know you and I think he can do fine without you and your hateful kind.

I do not respect him, I do 238not like him and I do not forgive him.
Yes, Gibson has had some dark issues to deal with, but your condemnation of him is staggering. Yes, he may be a hypocrite with some of his Catholic ideology; but that is for him to sort out and what you read in the media IS NOT always telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Are you Christian, because it sounds like you are placing judgement on him based on your own beliefs and value system? If that is the case, then I suggest you look at the notion of "forgiveness" and what C16d0hrist really stand for, instead of coming across as a phony contrarian and hypocrite yourself. If you act as though you are holier than thou, make sure you have your tongue planted firmly in your cheek and have your wits about you.

I can say really spiteful untrue things if i'm a bit drunk
I can say really spiteful things when I'm sober
which is all the time, since I don't drink
but I'd like to think I am being truthful about what I am saying.

What kind of beep is that? I bet you have no friends. I guess alcohol shows everyone their true colors, so did you write this drunk? Cause you sound like a complete cereal box scholar.

To steal from Dan Harmon:
"We're Robert Downy Jr. He was so high he was crawling through people's windows. Now, he's Iron Man."
Can only imagine what no one saw. But I guess all of us are just perfect angels, yeah? I've never said or done anything wrong!

He shouldn't have made negative comments about Jews - but nearly everyone forgets the context of Mel's remarks. Shortly beforehand, droves of Jews had ripped him a new one for directing
The Passion of the Christ
; they tried (wrongly) to portray the film itself as antisemitic. There's no way to prove the following assertion, but I believe that had the Jewish community adopted a "live and let live" approach, Mel never would've been caught out in a situation where he was tempted to make antisemitic remarks in the first place. -

My preferred word here is "tempted." The word "drive" almost implies that Mel couldn't help saying what he said, but I don't believe that. He
could
help it. All I'm saying is that his comments weren't out of the blue: the antichristian Jewish lobby (no,
not all Jews
; I am
NOT
antisemitic) vilified Mel and his film without just cause - so Gibson's natural reaction was to get angry and say things in the heat of his anger.
He shouldn't have done it; I'm not excusing or condoning his words. I'm merely pointing out that it's not like he just woke up one morning and thought,
I'm gonna make some public antisemitic comments today!
with zero instigation.
