I actually thought she was very good in Annie Hall and the Godfather movies(okay, at least 1 and 2). But I was very dissappointed in her work in the Family Stone. It was really bad acting. Very forced or unnatural. But I also think the story was really predictable and the movie was just plain bad. I am sure I will get alot of crap for this!

I don't think you will get 'a lot of crap for this' since you are entitled to your opinion. I liked a lot of her movies but didn't think that either The Family Stone nor Because I said So were particularly good examples of her great skills and wonderful comidic talent.

I agree t5b4hat sometimes, in a couple of the films of late (The Family Stone and Because I Said So), she sometimes goes into a bit of flighty histrionics. But, I think it's more the script as opposed to her. Some of the aforementioned films are definite must-sees, as well as, without question, "Shoot the Moon". She was ABSOLUTELY SUPERB in this drama. I always call it a modern day "The Pumpkin Eater", my favorite film of all time. Shoot the Moon is so hard to find now, even on VHS. But, I'd love to find it n DVD. She and Albert Finney play an unhappily married coupleand that's all I'll say. It was made in 1980. Why she wasn't nominated for an Osdar and didn't win it, I'll never know.
I love her. And, I think she's wonderful in "Manhattan".she plays such an uptight, upper East Side, intellectual snob.and is hysterical. Check her out in that one as well. In fact, I always thought that she was very close to that personality, for years, and so never liked herfor years. I thought that she was just so stuck upand I couldn't have been further from the truth. I saw her on David Letterman finally, about 15 years ago or so, and was completely taken aback by how shy, awkward, and uncomfortable in her own skin she was. It was strangely charming.she seems much more outspoken and confident now, in her later years. But she just seemed to be so uncomfortable on Letterman's show.

How did you find Goodbar? She's perfectly cast; so natural and not extraordinary or glossy.
And i will reply to the previous posters, "Baby Boom" is quite brilliant if you don't ask for too much from it.

Diane Keaton is not a flashy actress is all. She never gives the impression that acting is what she is doing. That said, she is a marvel at really getting to the emotional center of her characters. That scene in "Something's Gotta Give" where she confronts Jack Nicholson on the street is amazing and in "Marvin's Room," the scene where she accepts the fact that she is dying and chooses to focus on the fact the she was loved is heartbreaking. I think Diane Keaton is a stunning actress and a wonderful interview. To the original poster: I would reevalute my opinion of the magnificent Ms. Keaton!

                      She was OK in
                      Goodbar
, but she wasn't Theresa as written in the book. I was disappointed by the way this novel was translated to film, particularly in the way they completely rewrote the character of James.

Sounds like a good summary. Nevertheless, it would be great if her acting ability were challenged and highlighted once again by a more promising script. Neither BISS nor TFS were particularly great as movies that one wants to watch again.

I really liked her performances in Godfather 1 and 2(particularly the second one), but something felt really off in Godfather 3. I really didn't like TFS or her character in the movie but I felt her portrayal was convincing.

Somewhat surprising that it's not nearly as awful as it could have been, but tragic to watch Diane Keaton's career continue its path into embarrassing roles that undermine her acting talent.

The above was a critique of her role in Mad Money and I agree but there are a limited # of roles out there for women her age and the competition is fierce.at least she hasn't sunk to trying to re-arrange her face.YET!

Like most of the actors of her generation, she was great when she was younger (& Hollywood had meatier roles) and then went into a schtick in her latter career. See her films of the 70s and maybe some of the 80s for some real acting. Looking for Mr. Goodbar, The Godfather films, the Woody Allen films, Reds. She probably jumped the shark about the time of Baby Boom.

Personally, I find Diane Keaton so annoying that I can't be objective about her acting ability. I don't think she's that goodbut perhaps I fe2000el that way because she bugs the heck out of me. It's just a matter of personal taste, I guess. And it doesn't seem to matter what she does. I disliked her in The Godfather, I didn't like her in Something's Got to Give, I didn't like her in those Father of the Bride movies, and I really hated her in Annie Hall, although I do like most Woody Allen movies. And that thing with Tom Skerritt, The Other Sisterthat was a pretty lousy movie, but I thought that Keaton was just terrible. On the other hand, I guess her character was supposed to be shrill, controlling, and highly strung.
It's hard to put my finger on what bugs me about her. She always seems ratcheted so tight, as if she were a screw or a washer that had been given a few extra turns. Does that make any sense? I wish I could see what others see in her. She's supposed to be one of the greats. Not for me, though.

You kids are only going by the little films you've seen of her from the past 15 years. You've probably only seen her in Annie Hall and Father of the Bride and Somethings Gotta Give and just judge on that. Get informed on her entire filmography first. And hell De Niro and Pacino peaked a long time ago too and do crap now. She is the only actress that can do comedy and drama equally brilliant. I think that deserves major props.
This is what you all should do, watch the film REDS. It will give you a whole new perception of Diane as an actress. I know it totally gave me a knew respect for her. Amazing performance. And it ain't the same as Father of the Bride or whatever I tell you that.
