Acting ability?

She was OK in
Goodbar
, but she wasn't Theresa as written in the book. I was disappointed by the way this novel was translated to film, particularly in the way they completely rewrote the character of James. -

Sounds like a good summary. Nevertheless, it would be great if her acting ability were challenged and highlighted once again by a more promising script. Neither BISS nor TFS were particularly great as movies that one wants to watch again.

I really liked her performances in Godfather 1 and 2(particularly the second one), but something felt really off in Godfather 3. I really didn't like TFS or her character in the movie but I felt her portrayal was convincing.

Somewhat surprising that it's not nearly as awful as it could have been, but tragic to watch Diane Keaton's career continue its path into embarrassing roles that undermine her acting talent.
The above was a critique of her role in Mad Money and I agree but there are a limited # of roles out there for women her age and the competition is fierce.at least she hasn't sunk to trying to re-arrange her face.YET!

Like most of the actors of her generation, she was great when she was younger (& Hollywood had meatier roles) and then went into a schtick in her latter career. See her films of the 70s and maybe some of the 80s for some real acting. Looking for Mr. Goodbar, The Godfather films, the Woody Allen films, Reds. She probably jumped the shark about the time of Baby Boom.

Personally, I find Diane Keaton so annoying that I can't be objective about her acting ability. I don't think she's that goodbut perhaps I fe2000el that way because she bugs the heck out of me. It's just a matter of personal taste, I guess. And it doesn't seem to matter what she does. I disliked her in The Godfather, I didn't like her in Something's Got to Give, I didn't like her in those Father of the Bride movies, and I really hated her in Annie Hall, although I do like most Woody Allen movies. And that thing with Tom Skerritt, The Other Sisterthat was a pretty lousy movie, but I thought that Keaton was just terrible. On the other hand, I guess her character was supposed to be shrill, controlling, and highly strung.
It's hard to put my finger on what bugs me about her. She always seems ratcheted so tight, as if she were a screw or a washer that had been given a few extra turns. Does that make any sense? I wish I could see what others see in her. She's supposed to be one of the greats. Not for me, though. -

You kids are only going by the little films you've seen of her from the past 15 years. You've probably only seen her in Annie Hall and Father of the Bride and Somethings Gotta Give and just judge on that. Get informed on her entire filmography first. And hell De Niro and Pacino peaked a long time ago too and do crap now. She is the only actress that can do comedy and drama equally brilliant. I think that deserves major props.
This is what you all should do, watch the film REDS. It will give you a whole new perception of Diane as an actress. I know it totally gave me a knew respect for her. Amazing performance. And it ain't the same as Father of the Bride or whatever I tell you that.
Mama:They're all gonna laugh at you!
Carrie:For reals?Then I'll f*k them UP! -

"You kids are only going by the little films you've seen of her from the past 15 years."
Uh, I'm not. I've seen all three Godfather movies, Manhattan, Sleeper, some of Baby Boom (now, that was awful), Mrs. Soffel (don't remember a thing about it, so I guess she failed to impress), and your beloved Reds, which I hate to say did nothing for me. Oh, and Play It Again, Sam. BTW, Annie Hall and Father of the Bride are more than fifteen years oldam I splitting hairs?
I would like to see a few other of her OTHER older films, but I keep thinking that if I don't like her in the movies I listed, why waste my time? Anyway, I have on my list of possibles Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Interiors, and The Little Drummer Girl. I just can't bring myself to watch them. Yet. -

'Can anyone explain to me, why they think diane keaton is a fantastic, gifted, talented actress?
Because whatever it is. i don't see it.'
wow..Glad to see I'm not the only one.
My hypothessis: if we are told that she is,therefoe she is. This thing she does is judged to be so wonderful; I don't believe it either.
Good not = great. -

Drab, unfunny, depthless, poor speaking voice, singing even worse.
Just plain limited. Other than dressing up like a funny clown in Annie Hall a one note actress still getting by on Woody and Warren's direction for her to go into the stuttering disbelief routine 30 years in.
A pipsqueak compared to the powerful work of her contemporaries Fonda, Spacek, Burstyn, Dunaway, Sarandon and the list goes on. I'm with the thread originator, a dull as dishwater unanimated bore with no reach. -
