More accurately, I'd say he tries to report on people and situations he finds important to report on. Because he does not paint such figures in boiled down, convenient brushstrokes with connotations of fear attached does not make him a "bad" person, but rather a curious one.
It's convenient for us to think of people as "monsters" when in reality, this country can be viewed as rather monstrous in places around the world. In some strange way, I think it makes us feel "safer" to think from this oppositional standpoint all the time, like being fueled by fear.
We constantly lose perspective based on what we are fed in the media, and should be reminded of this.
What he is doing is not right or wrong, Penn is a continually controversial figure which is why he makes headlines. But he is seeking more than what we are preordained to think by various media outlets, or government, etc. This level of questioning is admirable to those who admire independent thinking and open mindedness. -

Sean Penn has a personal fondness for hobnobbing with people who are enemies of the U.S. government. Every so often one of these people uses this to their advantage, by flattering him and showing him a good time, and in return they get a glowing article.
