Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — John Cazale

    thagodivashorti — 20 years ago(March 26, 2006 11:37 AM)

I never realized he and Meryl Streep were engaged till I saw it on here a couple months ago. But then I just realized that she got married 6 months after he died. But she and her husband are still married so I guess when its right, its right.

I've read that Meryl was with him to the end, doing all she could for him, and giving him her love and moral support. I remember reading, at the time of his death, that his many friends mentioned her unwavering love and support and all that she had done to help him. At that time, I barely knew Meryl Streep, but I did know who John was, and I was so impressed with her dedication to the man she loved. Everyone has always said over and over, what a great guy he was.

From what I understood, she demanded from Cimino that Cazale got the part in The Deer Hunter, otherwise she'd refuse her part. Actually, I just saw the film last week again and once again I was amazed how powerfull a film that was

Actually according to Cimino it was a dying wish of Cazale that he wanted to play in a movie with Robert. The Producers did not want a dying man in the film cause they were scared that the he would die during the shooting of the Deer Hunter. Cimino refused to remove him from the cast and threatened to resign as director. Finaly he convinced the producers by writing an alternative script in which the dead of Cazale was explained in the movie.

Yeah but everybody is called a great guy after you're dead. Same as you always call a movie great when its over. Because its over, its finished, you can say whatever you want, it won't change anything, and anyway if someone is dead, you're not gonna bad mouth him or her when they are already dead.
When I pass away, and I'm dead and gone, I want people to speak the truth about me. I was an irritating loud-mouth who achieved nothing with his life and helped nobody. Just once I'd like to hear or see something like that said about someone dead. Just once

                          Nikola Tesla about Thomas Edison:
He had no hobby, cared for no sort of amusement of any kind and lived in utter disregard of the most elementary rules of hygiene His method was inefficient in the extreme, for an immense ground had to be covered to get anything at all unless blind chance intervened and, at first, I was almost a sorry witness of his doings, knowing that just a little theory and calculation would have saved him 90 per cent of the labor. But he had a veritable contempt for book learning and mathematical knowledge, trusting himself entirely to his inventor's instinct and practical American sense. "

Yeah but thats all beep when your talking about John Cazale..
If you watch the HBO documentary about him.. Its coming from literally some of the absolute gods of acting..
He was truly respected even when he was a live.
John Cazale wasent just some character actor.. Or a random supporting b68act.
He was one of the greatest actors of that generation.. If he had not died.. And or was still alive today, he would be getting the same praise no doubt.
Just watch the movies for yourself.. I have never ever seen someone put so much dedication and great acting into a supporting role like that.
Just watch the scene where Fredo and Michael are talking at the Tahoe compound.. Where fredo is on the chair arguing with Michael about being stepped over.. Its an absolutely amazing performance..
And his entire role in Dog Day Afternoon. He played it perfectly.. I cant see anyone else doing what he did in that role. You really felt for him. And even without saying much in that movie.. You could always see the EXTREME emotion pouring from his character without even opening his mouth.
John Cazale is not getting praise just because he died.. He is getting praised because he was one of the greatest actors of that generation and ever.

I saw a documentary about John yesterday, and Meryl gave all the credit to deNiro, he wanted John in the movie. She actually used the line "deNiro paid for him".
Edit: In a forum post at deNiros page I saw a comment that he paid the insurance bond for John.

This story about Meryl threatening to quit the film if Cazale didn't keep his role in Deer Hunter seems untrue. She was what Hollywood would call "a nobody" at the time, why would they care if she quit? I think she's the worst part of Deer Hunter. They should have let her quit.

nobody TO ME, and especially not that great at ACTING. It's beyond me, the things people say about her. She nearly ruined The Deer Hunter, anyone would have been better, AND she was AWFUL in Sophie's Choice. So whatever, the world loves mediocrity, they get it in her work. They should have let her quit, he was GREAT, what is she? Hollywood's a big joke nowadays, it's HARD to find ONE good actor. And Meryl is terrible at accents, btw. She might sound good to anyone who never heard any accents.
