Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Myrna Loy

    msladysoul — 18 years ago(January 29, 2008 12:31 AM)

I'm not a big Myrna Loy fan but I admire her as a person, which is saying a lot for me because most of the classic stars weren't admirable people off the screen. I admire Myrna Loy for speaking up for equality for black actors and actresses in films. While the others were ignoring the situation, Myrna way back then saw what was going on and wanted to help fix it.
    Myrna Loy said:
"Why does every black person in the movies have to play a servant? How about a black person walking up the steps of a court house carrying a briefcase?"
It takes a bold person to even suggest equality in films especially in a time era like the 1930's, she put her career on the line for her statements and she deserves all the acknowledgement and honor in the world. She wasn't just a great beauty and talent but a open-minded, selfless person who saw some wrongs and wanted to fight for the right thing. I remember reading her autobiography and one part that always stuck out to me is the part where her mother allowed her younger brother to play with a black boy and Myrna said that image always stayed in her mind. Their different skin tones made no difference, they were just kids of the same age, who had the same interests playing. I think she wanted others to know how she became the person she is by including that in her book. It all starts as a child how we become as adults.

For a time that racial prejudice was common, Myrna took a bold step and voiced her disgust. I admire her very much for that.

Very insightful for the time. That makes her as bright as Katharine Hepburn in many ways.

I LOVE this about her. Her views almost put her ahead of Audrey Hepburn on my list, but not quite

I am not sure how anyone can not be a big fan of Myrna's. If at all possible I did love her more after reading her autobiography. She was beautiful, civic minded and extremely well dressed.

Yes, I've also long admired Myrna as an actress and as an idividual. I agree with her politics and appreciate her strong stand for racial equality.
While you see many a White actress on screen treating her Black maid fairly, and participating in non-condescending conversations, it is pleasing to hear that Myrna has taken this notion off screen, to advance those less fortunate than their counterparts.
Now, I have yet to see Myrna's autobiography, but this indeed sounds excellent, so I shall have to place the thought upon a future wish list.

Myrna Loy, was a beautiful woman and a good actress. I can not say she is the greatest actress because I have not seen all of her roles. I read that she an active Liberal and ardent feminist those two things I have no respect for. I greatly dislike feminist and liberalism. She was probably a communist. Burn hell great lady. Vigorously
It was Republicans who were against slavery and fought vigorously to end it. Republicans also helpful during the Civil Rights era since most Reps voted for the Civil Rights Bill while many Democrats opposed it. I am sure all of you think Republicans are racist and Democrats are all not racists. If that is true all of you should be ashamed of your thinking.
Secondly, Blacks are just as racist. Why all of you make whites to be the villains and not the blacks. Look at television today, there all black comedies with no whites. Blacks also have their own network for all black programs. "BET" At card stores there cards for blacks only "EBANY". Plus, Magazines that soley for blacks. Blacks have music awards exclusively for themselves. What if Whites did this oh' what white devils they would be
Thirdly, I prefer actors who keep their political opinions to themselves. They should not mesh politics with their work. Most people care to see their acting not their political preferences.
What if a conservative said that hey liked an actor or actress because that actor who held strong conservative views. Liberals would mock and critize the conseravtive because they find to be shallow. All of you who posted on here prove the same for liberals.

Youre a naive person who can face reality. I am sure you believe that all blacks are still oppressed. Reverse discrimination is ok with bleeding hearts like yourself. At least I have a heart and o2000ne believes a fetus is living being that should be killed because the mother is too selfish to give birth.

I found ddurost's post to be extremely hilarious. Not many people can take a threat about an actress who fought for civil rights decades ago and turn it into how blacks are evil and conservatives are being victimized. It's incredible, really.
Seriously. I also feel like starting a Republican Conservative Fund for all those disenfranchised conservatives out there who are constantly threatened and harassed by liberals and minorities who constantly infringe on their rights as citizens. I mean, really, how dare black people try to be comedians or try to create their own style of entertainment. It's just not far. Who do they think they are? Having their own magazines with black people on them? That's just disgusting.
I mean, no one in the whole wide world tries to appeal to or defend white conservatives. Every single movie, TV show and magazine out there is also trying to show us that minorities and gays are humans. How dare they. Minorities, gays and liberals are just stealing everything away from the good wholesome conservatives. It's just not far.

Oh ddurost, always sprouting the same old hate with the same old nonsense.

                                    1. HUAC never found any evidence that she was a communist
                                    2. If you prefer performers to keep their politics to themselves why are you always asking what their political parties were? And why are you always disappointed? Aren't they allowed to think differently from you?
You hate them for having different views from you, and so you criticize them, but you prefer them to keep it quiet, and then you pry anyway. Interesting.
Why don't you keep your political viewpoints to yourself?

Myrna probably sympathized with the plight of black actors, as she herself had to fight against ethnic typecasting in her early career. She was frequently cast as maids, vamps and slave girls like many darker-haired actresses of the day.
She was a class act for many reasons, and being vocal about racial equality is definitely one of them.

That's lovely to read. I'm a relatively new fan to Myrna Loy (much to my embarassment as a classical movies fan)and this gives me yet another reason to love her!
