Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — George Reeves

    padrepio1501 — 21 years ago(May 23, 2004 01:59 PM)

To the baby-boomers who grew up with an electronic baby sitter called television, there will always be only one REAL Superman, the one and only George Reeves. Since I was born in 1954 I guess I experienced George's portrayal of the Man of Steel mostly in re-runs.At the time of his tragic death I was five years old and I never remember a time when I didn't know that Superman was dead. What did this mean to a child? Well for me it explained why I never saw any new episodes of the Adventures of Superman. It didn't matter much because there were so many episodes (104 in all) that I figured that one day if I was patient enough, I just might tune in to one I hadn't seen yet. Many years later when the Christopher Reeve movies began I was happy to see Superman back in action but I went in knowing that for me at least, George Reeves could never be equalled or surpassed as Superman. Now Hollywood is having a ridiculously difficult time casting a new Superman movie and oddly enough similar problems getting a fictionalized biographical film about George Reeves into production. If I ruled the world both films would already have been made with Kyle MacLachlan in both parts! He could play Jor-El also . In FLASHBACK! None of this nonsense about Krypton NOT exploding and Jor-El still being alive. Why do they have to keep re-doing the origin anyway? I also like Matthew Perry for the role of George. He would be a SUPER choice I'm sure. I also like the idea of Brendan Fraser as Superman. He has already proved himself to be a wonderful actor in many fims good and bad and he is the right age for the part. Kirk Alyn nad George were both 37 when they played Superman. These 20 -something Aussies and Brits they keep mentioning for the role are much too young. The only answer would be to clone George but if cloning technology ever gets that far advanced we could have Elvis, the Beatles, Pete Ham and all the other late lamented greats back again. Put in a call to Pierce Brosnan you don't have to bother coming in tomorrow the Sean Connery clone just turned 37 and is ready to go. I've read that George was known to sleep around. Maybe there is a love-grandchild around somewhere waiting to break into show business. One can only hope.

Geroge Reeves has a special place in my heart (and the hearts of my siblings) as he was the first and only Superman we knew until the '78 film. But when that came out I had to hand it to Christopher Reeve. He looked much more the comic book part and that is tough to do. He had the height and the shoulders and the muscl5b4es and to a fair degree the face. He must have worked out like demon to get that build. He may have played the part a little softer and more innocent than I expected the comic book hero to be, but he was much closer than George Reeves who had the wrong coloring, the wrong body type and let's face it looked a little old. Still love him tho.
      Do you know that guy?
      No. But he's a dick.

The fact that you are ignorant is obvious by your inability to read and your inability to capitalize or spell. Matthew Perry is a talented actor and any actor will tell you it's tougher to play comedy than drama. I suggested him as a possibility for the role of George Reeves NOT Superman and anybody with good eye-sight can see that he does indeed resemble Reeves quite a bit. Brendan Fraser is also a fine actor and your primitive brain doesn't seem to comprehend that he too is quite capable of playing serious roles. What does Superman look like anyway? If you look at the way he is drawn in the comics today you will see a wide variety of looks as interpreted by different artists. Imao not kidding. As it turns out, in case you didn't already know, Ben Affleck is going to play George in "Truth, Justice and the American Way" and Brandon Routh will play Superman in "Superman Returns" and you can go back to scratching yourself.

Conincedience that both Christopher and George both shared the same last names, and both played superman. Christopher was practically unknown wasn't he? Maybe it was fate. 🙂 I didnt find out until recently that george played superman, but onw that i think of it, im sure i faintly remember a red-headed superman.. or did he not have red hair? =/ Well, im only 16, so i wouldnt know exactly.
anyway, im a big GWTW fan. So decided to pop by.
And to Patrick - mabe we might see your son as a rising star in the furutre! Best of look to him!

Just thought that I would let you know that they did not have the same last name George last name was Reeves, while Christopher last name was Reeve. Everybody keeps tring to add the letter s to his name.

Added to that, Reeves is not even George's real birth name.

I agree playing comedy is harder than drama. I have been in both on stage, and in comedy you have to make an absolute fool out of yourself, sometimes to the point where I have been embarrassed, or just can't stop laughing.
When I was growing up, I used to love to watch George Reeves reruns of Superman. I think he is the one that made me a Superman fan. I have seen Superman Returns (good movie). I own all 4 Christopher Reeve Superman movies. By far, the bes5b4t Superman is Christopher Reeve.

My folks and I have been watching seasons 3 and 4 of 'The Adventures of Superman' on DVD, lately. That George Reeves was like the "Fonzie" of the actors to play Superman. He did a sincere job as The Man of Steel, but he also had a sense of "cool" as Clark Kent and Superman.

My vote is for George Reeves as the Greatest Superman. Chrisopher Reeve, in my opinion is a close second. But I'm voting for GR.

Mr. Reeves was a very good actor and even though I'm in my 30's, I enjoy watching reruns of his series and know he's the best and only superman. Christopher Reeves is a good second and everyone else is not in the running.
