Nick Reiner was more than likely a spoiled brat. A lot of this would have been his parents fault. Parents mould their children. For Nick to do what he did, there was some real deep seated resentment corrupting his psychology.

I can imagine Reiner arching up, having seen him act in some movies. He's triggered his son bigtime, for Nick to want to kill him and his wife in the manner that he did.
I doubt we will ever know the whole truth, but Nick now has to live with this for the rest of his life.
I like some of Reiner's films, I didn't agree with his deranged projection of hate for Trump. Its just pure evolved TDS. He even threatened to self-immolate if Trump won. That is not a wise or ideal thing to say, for someone who is influential and highly prolific in his circles. Of course he was too chicken **** to do it.

Was Reiner's wife Nick's birth mother? If she was, he obviously had deep resentment for both of them. If not, she was just in the way.
A drug induced psychosis can make anyone snap, but I still feel there is still a lot to be told that needs to come to light. Perhaps Nick felt by doing the action that he did, it will bring something to light about who his parents were.
I'm still at odds and evens about the Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, but there were still some deep seated issues there. I doubt it was just for the money. They were spoiled and entitled, but these boys were ****ed up too in some way or other.

I got a lot out of the Netflix dramatization of
Monsters: The Menendez Brothers.
It even implied that Jose himself was molested by his mother and his sister bore witness to it. There is a scene where Jose calls his mother and breaks down and tells her it was wrong and that his sister tried to call her out.
That show was a rollercoaster of emotions and the acting was sublime. Its like a cycle that wasn't broken, but Jose was also an egotistical narcissist himself. He found some sort of American dream, but it became tainted and broken. I recall that cousin scene as well.
Yes, those boys were afraid of Jose and the mother was bossy and psychologically cruel too, if there is some truth to what was depicted.

The publicity surrounding the brothers and then the onslaught of the OJ case, it was like they became a scapegoat.
That last trial totally tore apart the defendants argument and appeared to lean bias to a skilled prosecution game. There were 2 dead bodies, the boys killed their parents but it was so much more than just money grabbing lust. The spending spree after the killings didn’t help their case either, but they just went off the rails and they weren’t even psychotic, just clueless to the reality of the real world.
