I only counted two mentions of Coen bros. FOR SHAME IMDB PEOPLE.
- Eastwood. He's the man.
- Nolan. How do you go from Memento, to Prestige, to Dark Knight, to Inception?! Amazing.
- Tarantino. Limitless boldness.
- Ritchie. I can't help it, his movies are just so win.
- Rodriguez. Cemented after Machete.
That's my list. Coen brothers probably should be on it, but they've had too many projects I didn't like - though the greats are in more numbers, certainly.
Polansky and Scorsese also on the threshold for me.
Coppola? Please. One of the most overrated people of all time, like his buddy, Brando. Godfather were great. Apocolypse now important. But his 5b4films lacked depth, character development, and the necessary injections of humor that modern film requires. I'd venture to say that, if they were to have been released today and not 40 years ago, they'd have never even touched the imdb top 600, yet alone 250 (yet alone 5).

You say it's a shame that only 2 people mentioned the Coen's and they're not even on your list? That doesn't make much sense.
- Martin Scorsese
- David Fincher
- Christopher Nolan
- Darren Aronofsky
- Robert Rodriguez

Some bizarre Top 5 lists on here. Most of Rodriguez films have been incoherent and shambolic. For some reason A list actors and character actors agree to work with him for pittens. The only reason must be that his sets and movies are fun to work on. They are quick and pay moderately well. To give him credit, he is inventive and creative. As a grindhouse tribute, Planet Terror was more reflective of the genre than Tarantino and Sin City was pretty pioneering with the use of green screen, colour etc.
However, as a storyteller, he is very poor. Sin City benefitted from the input of Frank Miller clearly. And From Dusk Til Dawn was by and large a Tarantino movie. But come on, Once Upon a Time was a shambles. The Spy Kids movies are poor, even my kids think so. Four Rooms was terrible. Desperado was just a mess. The Faculty was poor etc etc etc.
Besides, in this medium, given that the story is king, and if possible, some kind of depth is a virtue. How can any Top 5 list of current directors not include any of th following (in no particular order);- Paul Thomas Anderson
- The Coen Brothers
- The Dardenne Brothers
- David Fincher
- Jacques Audiard
Add to that list Scorsese, Nolan, Shane Meadows, Wes Anderson, Kelly Reichardt, Clint Eastwood, Wong Kar Wai, Eastwood, and yes yes Woody Allen, Terrence Malick Rodriguez is a little amateur.
Having said that, I would like Machete to be good because I do admire the fact he gets whatever movie he wants to make, made.
Peace,

Which ones don't you like? There's all three El Mariachi movies, Sin City, Planet Terror, Machete, From Dusk Til Dawn, The Faculty and even his segment of Four Rooms.
Cut out the kids movies and he's got a pretty good track record. -
