She is the most talented actress of the modern era and guess what she is not a household name in the world. That is a travesty. She is indeed elegant and intelligent, I know she is beautiful but I wish older women could carry themselves like her, she has amazing panache and dignity. She was fortunate in having a husband who was an extremely interesting, talented actor and director.

Ditto on the wonderful "Another Woman", the very best of Woody Allen's dramas, which I wish he would do more of. "Melinda and Melinda" and "Match Point" was a welcome return to this, but "AW" is still the templet that his dramas should shoot for. "September" which came out the year before was all right, but not quite as good. But sure, Rowlands is a gem and should very much be 5b4looked at with respect as one of our vintage actresses from way back

I've just seen "Opening Night" and "A Woman Under Influence" and she blew me away in both movies. It's beyond words! What an amazing actress.

She is a stunningly beautiful woman with an enormous acting talent. These qualities create an aura to her every time she appears on the stage or screen.

                  Gena Rowlands
.Her authenticity; her talent; her beauty; her keen intelligence. She possesses a unique quality of being simultaneously accessible and enigmatic, which is fascinating! She is never predictable nor cliche. Gena is an original.
                  My favorite Gena Rowland performances:
ANOTHER WOMAN (One of Woody Allen's best films, in my opinion)
                  GLORIA
                  A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
                  OPENING NIGHT
STRANGERS: THE STORY OF A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
                  UNHOOK THE STARS
                  AN EARLY FROST

I'm watching "Opening Night" and thinking how gorgeous she was when she was young. Then I check her birthday and she's 47 when this was was made!!

I think what makes her so special is that she encompasses the whole American ethos in her performances. She is real. If she were plunked down in the locale where her character is set, she would be right at home there. I don't get the feel that she is an actress performing but that she is the real character being herself. That is not an easy thing to pull off. I know almost nobody else in the movies who can do that. Maybe Helen Mirren but that is about the only other one I can think of.

She's gorgeous and talented. An earthy vulnerability combined with a fearlessness in showing base emotions. She seems like the kind of friend I would most want: someone who would give me the hard, honest truth and put her arm around me when I cried.
I love in "Gloria" when she taunts the hoodlums who are trying take the child from her. She's holding a pistol like a pro and saying "Ya sissies! You let a woman beat you!"
"Listenstrange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government."

HI, The best way I could answer is to say that much as Streep doesshe becomes who she is playing.
Think about the fact that after a few minutes of watching Gena, you forget who she is, because you are so busy watch who she has become!

I adore her, and have since seeing her in Gloria. That performance just blew me away.
And I agree with the other person who said her voice is one of her biggest strengths. Like Colleen Dewhurst, that sultry voice is magnificent and mysterious.
She really needs to receive an Oscar. Like yesterday.

Well, I don't see her in that way, but I just know that she is an awesome actress. My first embedded memory of her was in the movie, Gloria, when it was on TMC in the early 80s, and I thought she was an excellent actress. She was watchable, and I was a teenager then. I didn't see her other or earlier works, but when she again appeared in Hope Floats, Taking Lives and The Skeleton Key that I watched, I was happy to see her again and she did a fine job playing different characters that weren't even alike. Unlike Julia Roberts playing herself in several movies she made. No disrespect meant to her, but GR is a superior actress.
Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.

Yes, she exudes class and warmth and intelligence and, of course, beauty. She's a stradivarius of an actress, and a dynamo in just about everything she does. Loved her in "A Woman Under the Influence", and she was completely robbed of an Oscar that year.
I want to see her in her earlier works that she did with Cassavetes, including "Faces", because I know she was a stunner in her younger years (but is still a beautiful woman), and I love that period of film-making.
