What makes her so special

One of you singled out her performance in A Woman Under the Influence, one of the most electrifying female performances I've ever seen. She's emotionally raw in that one, playing every thought and feeling with abandon and honesty. Her physical beauty, earthiness, vulnerability, childlike nature and explosive anxieties are riveting to watch. Also impressive is way she used gestures and body choreography to communicate when a flood of emotion blocks her speech. Sure she was a "looker" back then, but it's what she did with those looks that made me sit up and take notice.

She is the most talented actress of the modern era and guess what she is not a household name in the world. That is a travesty. She is indeed elegant and intelligent, I know she is beautiful but I wish older women could carry themselves like her, she has amazing panache and dignity. She was fortunate in having a husband who was an extremely interesting, talented actor and director.

Ditto on the wonderful "Another Woman", the very best of Woody Allen's dramas, which I wish he would do more of. "Melinda and Melinda" and "Match Point" was a welcome return to this, but "AW" is still the templet that his dramas should shoot for. "September" which came out the year before was all right, but not quite as good. But sure, Rowlands is a gem and should very much be 5b4looked at with respect as one of our vintage actresses from way back

Gena Rowlands
.Her authenticity; her talent; her beauty; her keen intelligence. She possesses a unique quality of being simultaneously accessible and enigmatic, which is fascinating! She is never predictable nor cliche. Gena is an original.
My favorite Gena Rowland performances:
ANOTHER WOMAN (One of Woody Allen's best films, in my opinion)
GLORIA
A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
OPENING NIGHT
STRANGERS: THE STORY OF A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
UNHOOK THE STARS

I think what makes her so special is that she encompasses the whole American ethos in her performances. She is real. If she were plunked down in the locale where her character is set, she would be right at home there. I don't get the feel that she is an actress performing but that she is the real character being herself. That is not an easy thing to pull off. I know almost nobody else in the movies who can do that. Maybe Helen Mirren but that is about the only other one I can think of.

She's gorgeous and talented. An earthy vulnerability combined with a fearlessness in showing base emotions. She seems like the kind of friend I would most want: someone who would give me the hard, honest truth and put her arm around me when I cried.
I love in "Gloria" when she taunts the hoodlums who are trying take the child from her. She's holding a pistol like a pro and saying "Ya sissies! You let a woman beat you!"
"Listenstrange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government." -

HI, The best way I could answer is to say that much as Streep doesshe becomes who she is playing.
Think about the fact that after a few minutes of watching Gena, you forget who she is, because you are so busy watch who she has become!
