I can't even adequately put into words what I love so much about Gena Rowlands. I do find her immensely lovable and magical as you said. She really radiates warmth, sweetness and humanity, much like that other brilliant actress of a certain age, Ellen Burstyn. Her voice, her smile and her face are all lit from within. She seems very spiritual and I find it comforting to look at her. Plus, she's probably the greatest living actress still working in American cinema!

I totally agree! One of the things about Gena Rowlands that I find so special is that she combines a unique down-to-earthness with elegance. The earthness lies much in her voice, I think, in the way she speaks. I would love to listen to her reading a book. She has a fantastic voice! Does anyone know if she has done any "voicework"?
Another thing I see is that, unlike many other actors, she doesnt seem to be so narcissistic. She never stands in the way of the character she portrays, I find her genuinelly interested in human nature, that she always wants to convey something to people. But never in a pretentious way. I think this reflects in the fact that shes not that big a "star" - I dont think that superficial world interests her much. But she certainly still has the looks for it! She has this very special beauty that comes from within. I read somewhere her view on beauty: "I think everyone should do their best to look as good as the can, and then forget about it!" Well put, I think.
What a face that woman has! See her in "A woman under the influence" for instance. Or more recently in "Jaceys story" with Lou Gossett. Theres a wonderful scene towards the end of the film where she discovers that her estranged daughter has kept an armbrecelet that she sent her. The feelings that shows in her face in all shades and nuances - thats real acting. I dont know how she does it, its so balanced, not too much not too little - just genuine. I hope she soon gets a big leading part where she doesnt have to be these weird old ladies all the time (even though she does them fantastically). Id love to see her more like the elegant and beautiful woman of 76 years that she is. But I really would settle with her reading the phonebook the whole film! -

To me, she's perhaps the most natural & real actress ever. Even her small part in Lonely are the Brave makes a huge impression. She's incomparable. I wish she would play Jodi Foster's mother in something. I see a definite resemblance.

I agree that she is such a special, enduring person and actress, in both voice and looks. I know she is a "leading" lady, but I've always thought of her as a character actress, because she is still working, and she developes the character of the part so well. I wonder if she does any work at any of the drama schools. The up and coming could learn so much from her.She has such nuances in her performances.I also love that she works with her son Nick.I read a fiction novel (first book for author)Title:"Saving CeCe Hunnicutt".I immediately pictrured her as the elegant great aunt all through the book as the one who drives to bring the great niece to live with her in Savannah. Even though it was a simple story (Hallmark Hall of Fame, with a lot of great women characters,it would make a great movie part for this First Lady of the Stage,Screen and Television. Also,Sharon Stone's "Gloria" can't hold a candle to the one,the only, the original "Gloria".
A lovely,lovely person and actress. -

One of you singled out her performance in A Woman Under the Influence, one of the most electrifying female performances I've ever seen. She's emotionally raw in that one, playing every thought and feeling with abandon and honesty. Her physical beauty, earthiness, vulnerability, childlike nature and explosive anxieties are riveting to watch. Also impressive is way she used gestures and body choreography to communicate when a flood of emotion blocks her speech. Sure she was a "looker" back then, but it's what she did with those looks that made me sit up and take notice.

She is the most talented actress of the modern era and guess what she is not a household name in the world. That is a travesty. She is indeed elegant and intelligent, I know she is beautiful but I wish older women could carry themselves like her, she has amazing panache and dignity. She was fortunate in having a husband who was an extremely interesting, talented actor and director.

Ditto on the wonderful "Another Woman", the very best of Woody Allen's dramas, which I wish he would do more of. "Melinda and Melinda" and "Match Point" was a welcome return to this, but "AW" is still the templet that his dramas should shoot for. "September" which came out the year before was all right, but not quite as good. But sure, Rowlands is a gem and should very much be 5b4looked at with respect as one of our vintage actresses from way back

Gena Rowlands
.Her authenticity; her talent; her beauty; her keen intelligence. She possesses a unique quality of being simultaneously accessible and enigmatic, which is fascinating! She is never predictable nor cliche. Gena is an original.
My favorite Gena Rowland performances:
ANOTHER WOMAN (One of Woody Allen's best films, in my opinion)
GLORIA
A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
OPENING NIGHT
STRANGERS: THE STORY OF A MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
UNHOOK THE STARS
AN EARLY FROST
