Ever since the first flick I saw with Zahn (Saving Silverman) I've been intrigued by him. He can be hysterical with ease but can also act. He's got a wide range and is definitely underrated.

I agree with what previous posters, who have said Steve Zahn is a top-class and under-rated actor. I haven't seen much of his work, but certainly in "Rescue Dawn" his acting makes the film memorable (along with Christian Bale, who is also excellent), and, again, in "Commanche Moon", he retains the essence of Robert Duvall's Gus, whereas the rest of the production sadly fails to match up to the quality of the "Lonesome Dove" original.
I would certainly like to see him in roles with a higher profile which are challenging/independent/imaginative/creative productions, rather than Hollywood blockbusters, in order to display his talents to their fullest.
To reiterate the comparison, I believe that Christian Bale could be one of the best actors of his generation, and I believe this view is supported by his roles in "Rescue Dawn", "The Prestige" and "El maquinista" (The Machinist), and even in lower quality films such as "Harsh Times" where his acting is the only reason to watch it. Unfortunately, more recently he has been working on mindless roles in "Batman" and "Terminator", which are less than challenging to both the actor and to the viewer.
I really hope that Steve Zahn does not take this path, and instead intends to aim for challenging roles in smaller productions, where the emphasis is on writing (plot, characterisation and dialogue) rather than big budget and big salaries. -

Steve Zahn has to be one of the most underrated actors of today. This guy is pure genius. I used to think he was only good for "clown" roles but then he surprised me with a handfull of perfromances, which i thought wouldn't be possible. He can handle whatever role you put in front of him, the man is Oscar material.

This man may be under-rated but he is on the rise, and getting better all the time. You want to see an absolute gem of a movie? Check out "Management". You will laugh, and you will cry. I look forward to all the talent this man has to offer.

Just saw him in a silly 2001 movie called Joy Ride, where he gave a lousy performance in a lousy movie. Then right after I see him in the HBO series Treme, and he's pretty good. He's grown a lot as an actor.

I agree, this guy is really underrated. I enjoy him whenever I see him in anything. He's a really good dramatic actor, but also a really good comedic actor Actually the comedy roles come so natural to this guy, I'm kinda surprised he didn't become a bigger comedy film star.

it blows my mind why such highly talented actors such as steve zahn, sam rockwell, and gary oldman have not won an academy award for amazing performances that seem to be overlooked by the academy.. i understand that gary oldman has an extremely large fan base and wouldn't exactly be considered under-rated since many people give him credit for his performances but zahn and rockwell are certainly two of the most under-rated actors of our generation.. all 3 of them deserve an oscar for many of their performances but it seems these days the academy has turned into mostly politics and seem to pick the bigger named actors that are covered more in the media so that they can get more viewers to watch the awards presentation.. it's sad how such raw talent like this can go unnoticed and unrewarded

I've loved Steve since You've Got Mail, where he TOTALLY outshined 2x Oscar winner Tom Hanks!!! That just says it all really. He's a terrific actor and I adore watching him!!
Watch Rescue Dawn, I almost cried!

i love him. he is a favorite. he makes every movie he's in, better, with that expressive face. he really just lights up the screen. for the naysayers expressing concern over his status in hollywood & the roles he takes, he is not going anywhere. i think there will always be a role for steve zahn. he is just the right amount of famous. he won't fade away, he will keep going steady on.
