If she in fact has some Sicilian heritage then that could explain it. Because Sicily is an island, many mainland Italians don't consider Sicilians as Italians (something that I don't subscribe to).
Sicily has had a very interesting racial makeup including Greek, Arab and even the Moors from South Africa. Obviously some families are mixed, and skin 238tones are generally darker than mainland Italians. -

Wrong. The Moors16d0 are not from South Africa. Try North Africa.
And the Sicilian /Italian population did not 'mix' with the Moors but fought bravely to resist the African hordes. Stories and plays to this day celebrate the Italian resistance to the Muslims. -
