According to Damion
"Damizza"
Young, a former producer of Carey's, Eminem offered her the role
of his mother in
"8 Mile"
(2002). The movie depicts Eminem's rise to rapper status.
But why Mariah Carey, she's only four years older than him?
Damizza, who worked with Mariah Carey on
"I Still Believe"
among other projects, revealed that he actually wanted to stop Carey from filming
"Glitter"
(2001) in which she plays the lead role of a rising singer. During this time he received a call from Eminem's team suggesting that he set up a meeting between Eminem and Mariah Carey.
"They said he had this movie called '8 Mile' and wanted her to be in it,"
Damizza reported. Initially, Carey was skeptical and uninterested. When it became clear that it was a serious film role, she asked for Eminem's phone number.
Eminem:
"I really want her in the movie."
Damizza described how he called Eminem and urged him not to treat Mariah the way he treated Christina Aguilera, with whom was tension and conflict in the past. Eminem replied,
"I really want her in the movie."
During a subsequent phone call, the request came up: Eminem wanted Carey to play his mother.
"She didn't like it at all. Her insecurities really came to the fore."
Ultimately, Kim Basinger took on the role of the mother who is 19 years older than Eminem.
Dispute over an alleged Relationship
Rumours about a relationship between Eminem and Mariah Carey were long-standing, which Carey always denied. Damizza claimed on the
TFU Podcast
that Mariah was interested in Eminem. In a 2002 interview with Larry King she said,
"I met with him and talked on the phone, maybe four times in total. I don't call that dating."
In contrast, Eminem publicly addressed their alleged relationship several times.
This led to a public exchange in the form of diss tracks. In 2009, Carey released her song
"Obsessed"
with a video in which she mocked Eminem. Eminem countered at once with
"The Warning"
, officially ending the dispute.
In 2023, Eminem and 50 Cent announced their intention to adapt
"8 Mile"
into a series, more than 20 years after its theatrical release. There's no further information about the plot or when the production will begin.

How his Music continues to shape Hits today
He died 275 years ago, but Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions live on today in jazz or
songs by the Beatles, Lady Gaga and Eminem - as quotations, allusions or rhythmic inspiration.
Bach's music often swings and dances in a groove all its own. This groove inspired many musicians, including the French pianist, arranger and composer Jacques Loussier. With his trio
"Play Bach"
Loussier adapted countless works by Johann Sebastian Bach since the 1950s, making history — as arguably the best-known, but by no means the only jazz musician to draw on Bach. The acclaimed debut album by a Swedish trio calling itself
"Bach Jazz"
was released in 2024.
Bach Jazz
and Jacques Loussier are among a number of performers who made several of Bach's works their own and studied him intensively. But that's not the only way to commemorate him. Many musicians do so more briefly and sometimes even somewhat discreetly, only occasionally hinting at a reference. Such as the Beatles, whose affinity to Bach shines through in songs like

"All You need is Love"
but also in the trumpet solo in

An Organ Toccata by Eminem: Would Bach have rapped along?
Bach's music fits into pretty much all musical styles. Lady Gaga begins her song
"Bad Romance"
in the official music video with a short prelude by Bach. It's a quote from the B minor fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier, albeit at an over-the-top tempo and rattling through mechanically. Even a supposed bad boy like Eminem draws on Bach. When he raps along to an excerpt from the famous organ toccata in the song
"Brainless"
accompanied by a piano sample. Such sounds certainly wouldn't have occurred to the composer 275 years ago. I wonder if he's turning in his grave or secretly rapping and grooving along?

Eminem sues "Swim Shady"
Eminem achieved worldwide fame with
"The Real Slim Shady"
in 2000. Eminem now stands up for his life's work and takes legal action against an Australian beachwear company called
"Swim Shady"
and officially filed a complaint with the USA's Patent and Trademark Office in September. According to his lawyers, the company attempts to create a false association with the rapper – and profit from it. His legal team emphasized that the name is
"unique, famous and closely linked to his career"
.
The Sydney-based company was founded in 2024 and sells beach accessories such as parasols and beach bags. It originally launched under the name
"Slim Shade"
— no wonder Eminem's team raised the alarm. The trademark
"Swim Shady"
was registered in the USA this year and shortly afterward, Eminem filed a lawsuit.
The rapper also officially objected to the trademark in Australia. The problem? Eminem himself only trademarked
"Slim Shady"
in Australia in January 2025 — significantly later than in the USA, where he held the trademark since 1999.
Nevertheless, the company behind
Swim Shady
puts up a fight and declared in a statement that it will
"defend its valuable intellectual property, which was founded with the desire to produce stylish and effective parasols and other items designed to protect against the harsh Australian sun"
. According to the BBC, they declined to comment further.
The Countdown is on
The U.S. rapper submitted his petition to the USA's Patent and Trademark Office in September 2025.
The company must respond to the petition by next week at the latest (end of November 2025)…or shut down the company.
