I remember Jasmine saying that she couldn't understand why people would always ask her why she calls herself "black". But she's not black; she's mixed (I'm black so don't get offended). She always denies her other half. That's why people don't like it when she calls herself black.

She says she's black for the same reason most bi- or multi-racial people with African ancestry say they're black - because most white people would never accept them as white, and they would never be regarded as anything but black. When you see JG and women who look like her, do you see a light-skinned black woman, or a dark-skinned white woman? It's not their fault if they're largely shunned by whites, and largely accepted by blacks. Also, I wouldn't say she 'denies' her heritage - she often praises her mother in interviews. But she's smart enough to know that people regard her as black.

I AGREE WITH YOU 100% WHY IS THIS A RACE ISSUE . LIKE THEY SAY IF YOU HAVE AN OUNCE OF BLACK BLOOD IN YOU THEN YOU ARE BLACK . IT IS NOT THAT SHE IS DENYING HER WHITE CULTURE IT IS THAT SHE KNOWS WHO SHE IS AND DON'T HAVE ANY HANG UPS ABOUT IT .. COME ON NOW WHO IS BEING A RACIST? Technically I'm only 25% black, but I've never had someone tell me I shouldn't consider myself a black woman because I'm 50% Indian and 25% Sicilian. That doesn't mean I don't have the right to consider myself a black woman. I also identify with my Native American and Sicilian heritage.

My thoughts are this: identify with whatever race you feel you should identify, be it black, white, native american, asian or all 4!
Keep in mind though, that regardless of what you identify with on paper, in your mind, or in your heart: when someone looks at you they see black or white, hispanic or asian. People judge you by how you look and it doesn't matter to them if you are half black and half white, if you even look the tiniest bit like you could have some black in you, 9 times out of 10 someone is saying to themselves: That person is black.
Prime example, Halle Berry's mother is white, her father is black. Yet she was the first 'black' lead Bond girl, the first 'black' woman to win the Best Actress Oscar
No one looks at Halle Berry and says, "Oh there is a biracial woman!" they say, "Oh look at the black girl"
and I am sure she is just fine with that

Agreed. My father is Native American and Black, but all people see is a black man. My mother is Native American and Sicilian. With her "caramel" complexion and dark hair curly hair, people automatically assume she has black in her. All people see is a light skinned black woman, even though she's not. Shes been called Negro, Black, etc since she was a child. She doesn't correct people. She let's them assume what they want, and of course, marrying a Black man has definitely made people consider her Black woman. She's not hung up on race, but she does consider herself to be a woman of color.
You are also right about how the world sees color first. It's not just this country. Ive encountered it every where Ive traveled. As African Americans, we complain that other ethnic groups single us out and make race an issue. I just don't understand it when we do it to each other as well. -

It's unfortunate that you say you have experienced it in other countries because I had always thought that most other countries were a little more mature and tolerant and that is because of the way blacks in particular are treated. Why does Tina Turner prefer Europe to the US? Why did Josephine Baker? The US has never been open minded or accepting of everyone so celebs will often mov2000e to Europe, and it's unfortunate that people must become citizens of other countries to be able enjoy life a little bit more
However now that I think about it I am a little less surprised. A few months ago a friend of mine had some friends visit who were from Germany and we began talking about a number of things. When asked where I lived I began to reply then I was asked: "You live in the projects don't you?" as if that's where all of us [blacks] live and she thought she had answered her own question. It pissed me off but I just passed it off as their ignorance as I explained to them that all blacks don't live in the projects just like all whites don't live in trailer parks.
I don't understand why we do it to each other either It must be ignorance.

I am tri-racial(latino,native american and white) and i idenify myself as latino. if people ask my race then i say latino. Its funny thlugh because i do get offended when people seem to deny a part of themselves. When halle berry won the oscar and said she was proud the be the "first black woman" to win an oscar i was pissed. She was raised by her white mother, who most likely had to struggle a lot to raise her. I do agree that a lot of ignorant people will look at her and jsut see a black girl, but i still think it was un-fair for her to say that. Her mother may not know what its like to be a minority but she had a relationship with a african american man and had a bi-racial child, was that easy? im guessing not.

People aren't being "ignorant" for seeing Halle as a black girl. People see her as a black girl because she LOOKS like a black girl. Most people would never guess that she has a white mother because Halle looks like the average black women. She does NOT look biracial at all.
