In all honesty, Zhang Ziyi is incredibly overrated. Out of the so-called "Four Flowers" (according to the press and popular consensus, the four most prominent young actresses working in China, including Xu Jinglei, Zhao Wei, and Zhou Xun) Zhang's acting is by FAR the most subpar. I agree with what one of the posters said - her best performance remains her first one, and she's done absolutely nothing to expand on her skills after that. Pretty pathetic.
Bu comparison, Xu Jinglei directs, writes, and acts in her own films (2004's "Letter from an Unknown Woman"); Zhou Xun has amazed in films like "Suzhou River," "Beijing Bicycle," and "The Equation of Love and Death"; Zhao Wei has created a unique perso1c84na for herself as well, playing assertive roles in films like "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" and John Woo's "Red Cliff."
Also, Tang Wei's performance in "Lust, Caution" was miles more courageous and intricate than anything Zhang's ever done. There's absolutely no comparison.

False.
"Zhang" is her family name, and as is traditional in China is put first in China. That's why it's "Zhang Ziyi" in China.
In the West, the family surname is put last. That's why it's "Ziyi Zhang" in the West.
"[L]egally switched" has nothing whatever to do with it.
If you are going to make yourself miserable with hating Ziyi, but don't like being miserable, then why in hell are you posting about her? Go away. -

My apologies. I meant to emphasize that she hasn't matured at all as an actress since her film debut; I do realize that there will be many who disagree with that statement. Personally I didn't hate her performances in CTHD, Hero, Flying Daggers, 2046 - they were fine, and completely serviceable to the films. However, when critics heap praise on her acting, I feel like it's overkill.
With all due respect, I admire the fact that Ziyi possesses many diverse talents. People look for different qualities in actors though; for me, the most important aspect is being adventurous, seeking out challenging roles, stepping outside his/her comfort zone, etc. IMHO, Zhang Ziyi's been hardly that.
Good to hear from a Tang Wei fan though! I agree that she carried the film as well. Hopefully we get to see more of her performances in the near future.

Most of my Chinese friends dig her. Some of them commented on the photos of her with her boyfriend on the beach, where he had his face in her a s s-they thought it was nasty. So do I, but hey, if that's what floats her boat, then that's her business!

I live in China. Yes, it's true, that Zhang Ziyi is detested. It's jealousy and envy.
However, I do think, Zhang Ziyi needs to "practice what she preaches". In an interview, she remarked, how the younger Chinese generations, want "the latest brands aka - they everything now", but that they need to remember, how the previous generations suffered. Now whilst the previously mentioned, may be true, it hasn't stopped Zhang Ziyi, from wearing the latest brands / buying when she wants.
Nonetheless, Zhang Ziyi is doing something right, because she is ALL OVER CHINA - HER IMAGE IS EVERYWHERE. Furthermore, she must be very kind / considerate, because, she organized a fundraiser, to help the earthquake victims. -

Ths one intresting thing about Gong Li and ZZ being the most famous in China. They are SO different. Gong Li keeps a a low profile, always has, elusive. ZZ does not. -

I find it hilarious that the one actress many on here claim to be better loved in China, worked so hard to become a citizen of another country! (Singaporean) LOL!
Do you guys see the irony in that? Maybe since we aren't even comparing Chinese actresses anymore, we should open the debated to all International actresses.
If I was Chinese, I'd at least like the one who still wanted to be Chinese.
The jealousy on this thread is incredible. People are just mad she's engaged to a westerner.
Get over it.
