I think Cristin Milioti is a cross between Alyson Hannigan(Lily) and Summer Glau, with a little Jennifer Love Hewitt thrown in.
.With Colbie Smulders(Robin), the similarities I see are in their skin tones and hairskin; that alabaster, pale, porcelain, whitehair; in colour + softness
I find Her and Alyson Hannigan have a very similar facial structure and design. Only, Cristin's face is a little smaller.[Just something I noticed, not meaning to be harsh in [my] critiques on either.]
I, too, am glad the show chose a relatively unknown actress for
the mother

You are obviously not the only one who noticed it, based on the number of replies in this thread.
I noticed it, as well and I am thrilled. Seriously, you could say that Ted may have harbored some subconscious feelings for Lily and so fell for a girl just like her, but I really dig the fact that Ted fell for a girl that looks so similar to the two most important women in his adult life.
