I read somewhere that Lavender was white and had blonde hair.

i think i know why you think she supposed to be black aside fromt that pic of the girl
i think it could be because in matilda by roal dahl there is a girl called lavender who is black, and maybe you are confusing descriptions
sounds a bit weird but could be a possible explanation for your imanginary picture of lavender brown
who is clearly a white girl because of the thing where harry cant tell where ron's (who is white beyond words) hands end and lavender's begin
I highly doubt anyone was confusing a Harry Potter character with a Matilda character.
      Just saying.

5b4even though it was never clearly said she was black or white. I wish they would have made her black. Lavender was my favorite character. It would gave alot of black actresses a chance. I hope jessie cave can do it justice. I'm really starting to dis like all things harry potter though. 😕

So the reason I thought she was black for one was the assigning of the name Lavender to the black girl in PoA. Also after the last Harry Potter book came out Entertainment Weekly dedicated an entire issue to Harry Potter (movies and books) and they had a Hogwarts yearbook with photos of certain students. Lavendar Brown is included and she is blackI found it funny under her photo it says Interests: Divination, giggling, boys, giggling about boys. I know they hadn't cast the new Lavendar Brown yet but at the point of publication they 111cobviously know she is gonna hook with up Ron. They could have easily left her out of the yearbook since they didn't put every student that made an appearance in the books.

She's not black, it never says anywhere that she was black.

Jo never said Lavender was black, it was left to our imagination. Besides, Jo approved Jessie, so that means she's white?

It says NO WHERE in any of the book what race lavender is, and yes, the Patil twins are from India. I would know, I'm Indian, Patil is like THE most common Indian last name, its the name a lot of people think of when they see an Indian person. Prolly why Rowling chose it. At least in the movies they sorta pronounced Parvati right, the correct prononciation is PAR-vuh-tee, they said Par-VAH-tee, but I can live with that, people butcher my own name all the time.

Yes! It is possible for two even 1000 people to share first names. However, I agree that a lot of people were a little confused thinking of Lavender Brown who never got any face play until now and Lavender Patil who got plenty of face play. There is a difference.. One's indian and the other is not. However, I see this as a fact that when you read you really don't take it all in. If you did you wouldn't have racked your brain so hard to see the obvious. My only gripe about these movies is sitting in the theater and saying "Wait a minute, He/she was not supposed to say that line". And for all the characters they've introduced It's hard to not think they'll mess these last few movies up.

I don't think people can really make the other girl credited as Lav-Lav as the real Lav-Lav because if she was then we wouldn't have Padma Patil hanging around Parvati all the time and being a Gryffindor student (which annoys me to a degree). Oh well, good luck to jessie cave.
ps. The books never made it explicit that Lavender was a black girl. So, no problem for me.

i guess they just plopped an extra beside an actress playing Pavarti/ Padma and were like 'ok whatever, she's Lavender.' that was in the third movie. prior to the whole relationship. they probably thought they could take out that part.
i personally never imagined Lavender as black. i thought of her with long blonde wavy hair and light eyes. plus, the thought of thinking someone is black with their last name being Brown would make me feel uncomfortable. i dont know why i imagined Pansy Parkinson as black however.

Just because a character has the name "Brown" does not mean they have to be colored.

Microfatcat, you aren´t right. There is not description of her in the book. That nonsense about the "pretty brown eyes" comes from your imagination.

I always thought she was black too. That is just too weird that so many of us pictured her as one thing when it clearly (well at least according to a ton of people on this board) never gave a description of her.
And obviously someone's last name (unless clearly ethnic like Chang or Patil) has little to do with what they look like. I didn't picture Lavender as black just because her last name was Brown. How silly would that be?

I always thought she was black while reading the books - but I suppose it's because the first (and only other) time I ever heard the name Lavender was in the movie Mathilda, and that character was mixed.
Same here. That's part of the reason why I always pictured Lavender as being African-American. It had nothing to do with her last name, I know a Caucasian girl with the last name Brown, but I just always pictured Lavender to be African-American for some reason.
I say what I want. I do what I want. I get what I want. End of story.
                                Why so SERIOUS?

The books don't mention race at all. What does it matter anyway? So what if she was black in the first place? (she didn't have a big role!) What matters is whether she can ACT the part of Lavender Brown. (all soppy and "drunk on Ron") Tsk. It's like Katie Leung and her scottish accent all over again.
Anyways, seems she has some acting credentials! I'm sure she'll do a great job as Lavender Brown.

notice that in the part where Ron and Lavender kiss for the first time JKR mentions its hard to tell whose hands are whose. if she was black Harry would be able to tell which hands were hers
