Well the Irish government probably wouldn’t have treated the Irish as **** and let so many die but I guess that counts for nothing.

It was a mixed bag but we certainly benefited from it. I think one of the more ignorant jibes thrown at the Empire was that we were just conquering primitive people but we were also fighting other European countries for these lands at the same time.

This. Not so hidden forces make people of the world fight each other. In America its a two party system. In Ireland, it's that IRA protestant vs catholic.
