She was considered to be the new Angel after Kate Jackson left. She's certainly got the looks down. She might have been a bit too exotic next to the other Angels. The producers said she would be too tall, standing next to shorty Cheryl Ladd.

Interesting I didn't know that.
Why pander to Ladd though, she was my least favorite at any rate? I could see Bach as an ideal replacement for Jackson and she had plenty of charisma. If Farrah hadn't left and Jackson still did, I can see Fawcett, Smith and Bach as a ideal trio of Angels.
Found this Ladd quote:
[In 2000, recalling her first year on
Charlie's Angels
(1976)] I wasn't overly, warmly received, I wouldn't say that. There was a really interesting dynamic that had occurred between Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith that to this day I really don't know all the details of. There was a camaraderie, and they had success. I think when Farrah left, there was some awfully hurt feelings from Kate and Jaclyn.

In inception and kick start, the producers creatively and instinctual knew what they wanted and what dynamic worked. Nothing lasts forever, yet they just couldn't quite find that same magic brew to keep it the same.
These 3 ladies were destined to be grouped as a trio. It was like their blueprint birthright/calling. Ego's then got in the way with success.
Smith was smart and knew where her comfort zone lay, Fawcett thought she could reach for the stars that weren't hers to own and Jackson left out of resentment which I don't actually blame her for. She was too controlled by Spelling and had a shot to do something that would have assisted in boosting her career and it wouldn't have been for long.
