Ladd was terrific in this movie, but don't you think it would have been even better with Bogart playing Raven?

No. I don't. It needed a younger man, and as you said, Ladd was terrific, the performance of his life.

Much younger and fresher perhaps but not in 1942 (the year of Casablanca).

It seemed to me that in some scenes he was practically imitating Bogie. I kept expecting him to say, "I stick my neck out for nobody!"
