Try SOLE SURVIVOR from the early 80's. Very similar to CARNIVAL OF SOULS in atmosphere and creepiness. It takes place during the holiday season without being about the season. It's just been released on DVD and it's beautiful!

Second The Innocents, and on a similar tip, more genteel though still creepy as:

(For the clickshy that's MR James's 'Whistle & I'll Come to You' with the great
Michael Hordern, and a nice helping of bottomless dread.) -

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this one yet but check out House on Haunted Hill if ya get the chance! Make sure you rent the 1959 original. Skip the remakeit's pretty much crap in my opinion.
The thing is Bob, I'm not lazy! I just don't care! -

since nobody mentioned it, night of the demon is quite good.. as is black sunday, haxan, and the japanese films kwaidan, and onibaba. to second some already mentioned masterpieces.. the innocents, THE HAUNTING, freaks, kill baby, kill, vampyr, night gallery.. all really great older horror films. i think probably the scariest two in my mind are the haunting, and bava's kill baby, kill.

Dead Of Night (1945)
British anthology horror movie. A group of people gathered in an old house and each tells the story of something strange that happened to them.
It's been years since I've seen this so I don't rememberr a lot of details.
I don't know if it's currently available on DVD but I shouldn't be too hard to find a used copy (or VHS).
