Everyone should watch this and Dr Strangelove to see what it was like in 1964 and the fear from total nuclear destruction.

Add "On the Beach" to that list.

It was a concerted effort on the part of the film industry to influence the presidential election. Goldwater was portrayed as a hot head who would launch the bomb.

Read the trivia section on the main page: The two films were both made by the same company, and when he heard about fail-Safe Stanley Kubrick insisted that Strangelove be issued first so that it didn't look like he was copying FS. As a result a lot of people thought FS was copying DrS!
Even though I wasn't alive in 1964, I happened to see Srangelove first. I didn't see this one till years later but I still found it is actually hard to watch without creasing up a few times. Especially the president/premier phone calls! 8=0
Both are great films. I think the thing to do is, while watching one. try and forget the other one.

I love how both films are similarly plotted, but radically different in tone.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
