Who do you have to hassle to get this movie released on DVD and how do you go about it

Yes, the non DVD re-appearance of the 1970s cult movie seems extraordinary when just about every other film including many of variable quality is being rushed out I notice in the US that battered NTSC video copies of ZP are fetching $100, in the UK (where I'm based) it seems completely unobtainable (any suggestions anyone?). I've always assumed with such a prestigious line-up and various soundtrack artists etc it's been held up by copyright wrangles. So might we have to wait until 2020 (or is it now 2040?) Even then if it's still "DVD Region 1" that could prove problematic What a carryon! bb.

That's sort of incorrect, even though I get what you're saying. Really, fans of Star Wars and Zabriskie Point have been waiting eight years for the DVD (that's when it started), and maybe twenty if you take into account laserdisc. But I'm excited- I'd love to see an Antonioni film projected in a theater, in widescreen, stereo.

Information time: The reason why it took so long
Jack Nicholson hated the Michelangelo Antonioni film "The Passenger" so much that, as the only effective way to boycott the film, he bought the Antonioni MGM catalogue, and refused to release the films. However, Jack Nicholson was also the one who presented the lifetime achievement oscar to Antonioni, a sign that things were improving.

That seems a little harsh of him, and if that's true I'm certain by now things have changed because he was on the special features of the DVD of L'Avventura, reading two of Antonioni's writings and giving his (rather fond) recollections of working on the Passenger. Whatever gripes he had with him must've passed by now, and if so, hopefully he'll relinquish the rights. I mean, someone should give Antonioni a break, the guy could die any day (he's almost 93), and he may never make another film as long as he lives.

Like I said in my post, things are improving between them. The very fact that Blow-Up is on DVD proves this - Nicholson let that one go. Zabriskie Point is probably still being surpressed because of its initial failure, but I'm sure strides are being made.

the only place u can find it to even rent is at hipsters video stores in college or art school oriented towns and cities.

Actually, at a recent re-release screening of "The Passenger" at the Academy, Jack said that he kept it out of circulation because he didn't want it to become overplayed and just another forgotten part of pop culture. OR something to that effect. Anyway, you can look for "The Passenger" to get a wide release and a DVD later this year.
As to Zabriskie Point, I can't tell you when or why because I don't know.

as horrible and soulless as they are, hollywood video carries the film.

I saw the last hour or so on German television last night, didn't get much of the dialog (luckily there wasn't very much) but the photography was beautiful. This film is truly a cinimatographic masterclass!
I'm very sad to hear it hasn't been released on dvd, otherwise I would surely have taped it..

The Passenger is being released on DVD sometime in 2006 according to Entertainment Weekly - not sure about Zabriskie though.
