I still believe the guy in the cafe in the maroon shirt and cowboy hat was the trucker. The look in his eyes as he sips his beer tells me who he really is. When he left we see him go around the front of the truckThat's when he suck in his driver's side door, real sly like. The truck that we then see pulling out was another guy completely who just happened to be leaving then and there.

I thought so too but then she said this
It's not like you see the narrator in commentaries, you just hear the voice or voices. But there is a commentary track on the full-length feature version.
She was so very emphatic about it. -

This may be true. But since Carey Loftin as a real-life person is different from the truck driver as a fictitious person, it is still possible that in the universe of the film, the truck driver was in fact in the caf. Or maybe he wasn't. I think this uncertainty is intentional. It's a brilliant ploy of Spielberg to never show the face of the driver in the truck, to create the feeling of being exposed to a faceless anonymous menace; but making it possible, though not certain, that the driver is one of the people in the caf is even more brilliant, because it adds another level of uncertainty: We don't even know for sure if the menace is as anonymous and faceless as we thought at first.

I also thought it was the guy who left the cafe first. The way he touched the front of the truck, but then suddenly drove away in another car. My thought was that he just drove that car to the back of the cafe and then returned to the truck. BUT the times you see the drivers arm you can see that he is wearing a longsleeved shirt (which is rolled back from his forearm). The guy from the cafe wears a shortsleeved shirt.
Its not the guy who gets in a fight with David Mann at the cafe. The points of his boots is different from the ones the driver wears as you can see earlier when he checks his tires at the gas station.
After a rewatch yesterday, my theory is that the driver never entered the cafe.
