This one always bothered me. Al Pacino is unquestionably the lead of the film, but what about Brando? To me, he sort of straddles the line between lead and supporting.

Brando is the lead role…no one questions this.

Pacino is the lead in the sequel.

The story is about Al Pacino's journey from war hero - who is ashamed of his family's business - to eventual Godfather.
So, Michael is the lead character. Does that mean Pacino is the lead actor? It's unusual for a supporting character like Don Corleone to be played by the lead actor, but maybe it's not impossible.
I guess I'm on the fence with this one.

              Lead. He's Brando.
I can see this question for Superman tho. I guess Gene Hackman got top billing in Superman 1 and 2 because Reeve was unknown at the time.
