Yeah, I have to agree - those leotards superheroes wear are pretty tight, and yes, pretty gay.

Usually when someone finds a movie have Gay undertones where the plot is not designed to be gay, that person is trying to deal with his own sexual identity. Perhaps you want this movie to be gay.

I agree, this film is very camp. Arua being the extremely hot good-baddie is also very camp.
People know gay men love hot, stong women right??

I hate to sound disrespectful, but what the hellyou're father sounds like an old prude. Yes, Flash Gordon is a strange movie that has tons of sexual undertones in it, but he shouldn't have acted all weird to you over it. I grew up on the film and still enjoy it today.
Anyhow, yes, I can see where some folks would see homosexuality in the film here and there. I mean, the Hawkmen in their leather gear alone (and Sam Jones in his leather hot pants) had a very gay vibe to it. Oh well, it's all a part of the charm. The garish colors and the blatant jock straps that Ming's goofy looking soldiers wear (a nod to football, but also could be seen as queer) lends itself to the stereotypical world of the gay community in many folks' minds. I mean, look no further than Joel Schumacher, and openly gay director who stuffed his two Batman movies with the exact same thingsrubber nipples and codpieces, giant nude male statues, scantily clad men painted in gold and glitter, being "partners", a big phallic Batmobile, etc., etc. But Joel also populated his film with super sexy women including Nicole Kidman, Elle McPherson, Uma Thurman, and Alicia Silverstone (well, not so much in her case, LOL!). Elements of gay or not, Flash Gordon is unlike anything else!

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I still honestly don't see how people get "gay" from this movie. Seriously! I see "cheesy" and "silly" and "garish" but "gay"?! Is this a frequent accusation made against the film (even lovingly)? If anything, I find it overtly sensual in a "straight but kinky" way, what with Aura being whipped onscreen, hints of her relationship with Ming, seducing Flash and getting turned on watching Aboreans die, Dale being forced to "dance" for Ming, Klytus lusting after Aura, etc. We didn't get Barin lusting after Flash, or Vultan having orgies with his all-male Hawkmen, but we do have a catfight on a bed between the two female leads. 🙂
Maybe just because I'm not wired "that way" I don't see it, but I really don't.
Also, Batman's "that's kinda gay" surely comes from the hilariously camp 60's series which really (again) for me ALSO doesn't scream "gay" apart from having two guys as rather close "partners" wearing tights. Then again, Schumaker's Batman films are (IMO) utter trash.

Like I said, the garish aspect lends itself to the stereotypical world of the gay community in many folks' minds. I can see exactly why people would see it, and they don't have to be wired that way to see it. People associate this stuff with the gay community, but it really is more a stereotype than anything. It's the truth, or else this discussion wouldn't be taking place.

Fair enough, I guess. Personally, I just associate that kind of garishness with the 70's and 80's, myself! 🙂 Maybe, as you said, it's more a stereotype and perhaps somewhat a cultural thing, too (I'm an Aussie, and I've heard Flash was much less well received in the US than here and the UK, for instance).
Joel's Batman movies? Okay, yeah, I can see that (I mean, what IS Jim Carey wearing?!). But not Flash Gordon, at least until reading this thread. At worst it feels like a cheesy, bad roller disco.
Incidentally (to show I'm not just blinkered! 😉 ), my idea of "gee, that's kinda gay" is the 2009+ reboot of Doctor Who, in terms of getting that "vibe" you're talking about without actually being told anything and later learning the showrunner was in fact gay.

As far as Batman and Robin go, They was simply two people, an older brother and younger brother, or later maybe father and son fighting team. But if you let your imagination run away with you, then you have a middle aged man that keeps to himself, not only picks a teenage boy to train and fight with him, but also live alone with him in a big house. Alfred was there but what happens in the Batcave, stays in the Batcave..j/k Also Robin had some bright colored tights.

Your post is accurate for Batman and Robin in general, as proven during the 50s comic book crusade where they sought to prove that the superhero team was really promoting a homosexual lifestyle. But the 1997 Joel Schumacher film is filled with homosexual undertones and gay imagery, and that is really not up for debate.

We didn't get Barin lusting after Flash
Oh, I don't know. They did have that whip fight, after which Barin swore himself into Flash's service. 😉 And how the hell did Flash get so good with a whip anyway?!
On a more serious note, camp is definitely the word to use rather than gay. It's a good fun film. I'm still patiently waiting for the sequel!

I was about to defend this film by laughing at the gay accusation.until I suddenly remembered the shape of Zarkoff's space rocket. Even at 10 years-old, I always thought it looked like a giant penis flying through space.
