What movie am I thinking of?

I've been looking for a particular movie for years now. I thought that it was this movie, but I don't think it is. I saw it as a kid and was falling asleep at the time, so I can only remember one part, really..
Basically, the kid lives with his parents with a sandpit in the backyard. One night, the boy antagonist goes out into the gravel pit and finds a cave that wasn't there before with a light coming from it. Inside, he finds some large looking monsters that look like the monsters in "Invaders From Mars" and a leader type figure that looks like the guy in "From Beyond". The boy looked like the boy in this movie, but may have had brown hair.
While lot is similar to this movie, I cannot find the scene that I remember.

You are remembering this film, though your memories are probably a bit messed up if it is from a long time ago. This movie is a remake of an old fifties version of the same title, which also features the sand pit behind the house with an alien spaceship underneath.
Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
