We were on a very tight budget. I was only 6 at the time as well.

Many people DID see it at the theater. I'm 43, I was about 13, 14 at the time and my mom took me. You have to remember back then, parents raised the kids and made the rules. Very different than kids now that rule their parents and have no respect for their parents rules or wishes, and just throw a tantrum until parents give in in 5 minutes. I think it depended on if parents were willing to see it with their kids, or let their kids see it.

Per another thread (the "why was it a flop in 1986?" one), a few people who were born but still little kids in 1986, myself included having then being 5/now being 36, are saying they were not even aware of the film until years later. That's my excuse :).
