Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Murphy's Law

They're both police Sergeants, who don't exactly make six figure incomes even today. Murphy lives in a ramshackle house from probably the 1940's that looks like its never been remodeled and drives an economy car and Art lives in a luxury high rise and drives an Iroc Z Camaro. Looks like Murphy was probably drinking away his paycheck. Also, I can't imagine his wife living in that crappy house, either. No wonder she left him!

Art must have never gotten married or had kids. I knew a guy who retired at 50 and he attributed that to the fact that he never got married or had kids.

Good point. But I saw the movie recently and before Art agrees to help him he feels he can't risk his job and says "I owe up to here".
And yes, spouses and children will greatly take from you!
