In the film's final narration, the adult Gordie says:

"Chris was killed when he tried to stop a fight in a fast food restaurant. He was stabbed in the throat. He died almost instantly. He was just 17 years old."

I remember the film it mentioning he was a lawyer. So in the short story, he died at 17? I've never read the short story.

Were you an outdoorsy kid? I was always in the woods and in creeks it seems.

Definitely. My surburb was surrounded by woods. We were always in them building forts or exploring.
And in the winter we built snow forts.

I grew up in a hamlet. The greenspace around it is protected against any development.

Where I live now is surrounded by state protected land. I do hope it stays that way until I'm gone
