why do people overlook Catherine O'Hara's performance in this movie?

She's terrific in this movie. Usually she is the comic scene-stealer. In this film, she is more serious but brings a lot of heart. Her scenes with John Candy are funny, though, especially when she gets irritated with him.
She gets to be funnier in the sequel. -

I don't remember Catherine O'Hara's character being irritated with John Candy's character in the movie. -

At the airport, she gets slightly annoyed at him when he's showing off that he's a musician.
Agreed thigh, she is fantastic. She and Candy have a history together so they already had a chemistry. They were both on SCTV. -

I think the funniest part with the two of them together is when they're in the back of the Budget van and he keeps asking her to try playing his instrument and she finally goes "No!". Very subtle, but funny to me.

I'm rewatching this on TV this morning. This was always one of my favorite childhood movies. I agree, I love Catherine O'Hara. I also think she looked very attractive in this movie. And John Candy, God bless him. RIP forever o funny man.

She also gets annoyed in the van while he's telling the story of leaving his kid at the funeral home by mistake.
"Maybe we shouldn't talk about this."
"Well you were the one that brought it up so I was just trying to cheer you up"
"Yeah well I'm sorry I did."

I agree. She's great in this movie! I love the part when she steals the phone from that woman at the airport, and you can hear a man speaking french on the the other line. "Okay, what am I doing Hello? Hello? Hello? I'm sorry, she'll have to call you back. CLICK
