I don't know much about that commercial being banned but I'm sure a more likely explanation was that it would simply have ironic/camp value south of that border. The Molson commercials were appealing to their iconic Canadian base kinda tongue in cheek there by emphasizing Canadian uniqueness against Americansthat's not really gonna sell beer down here.
It kind of reminds me of Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie's jingoistic and partially accurate song about the War of 1812, or how observers noticed Germany during the World Cup showed more pride and patriotism than they'd socially allowed themselves since Reunification or, as it was grimly amended, 1945.
The commercial is mostly opinion of course but the writers did get one provable fact wrong. Canada is the second largest state in total area, not land mass. For total area, land and water, it's Russia, Canada, China (if you don't ask Taiwan), United States. For land it's Russia, China, US, and Canada. However you cut it the US and Canada are neck and neck, but Canada's just got 35 million people to the US's just over 300. But to quote the Arrogant Worms from their song "Canada's Really Big," "It isn't what you do with it/it's the size that counts!"

Canadians are known for being able to laugh at themselves. Honestly most Canadian humour is directed at Canadians.
I am a Canadian and I found this movie to be very funny.

Yeah, Canada, unlike the US, can take a joke. It's called freedom of speech instead of censorship.

The movie praises Canadians more than offending them. The movie more so pokes fun at over the top American patriotism and ignorance.
