Why do the french call this movie L'Obsession?!

One thing that always bugged me about the french is how they never translate english properly and butcher the words to death. The movie is called "The Crossing Guard" so should be called "Le Passage de Garde" in french. However on the DVD the french title is: "L'Obsession". Now I know in the movie Freddy is "obsessed" with his daughter's killer but do the french really have to elaborate that fact in the goddamn movie title?

You're Canadian ? Well, so much for checking your information first. When you said "French" you actually meant people from Qubc right ? (people from you own country then)
In France, the movie is called "Crossing Guard" (we dropped the article) -

No, the correct
literal
translation would be
Garde de Passage
, but as anyone with any intelligence already knows, you cant translate phrases literally. If this had been a British film, by your logic, it would have been titled
The Lollipop Man
, which translates as
LHomme Sucette
(which actually works quite well as a title), but then, what would that actually mean?..

Because Jack Nicholson's character is obsessed with revenge. Wich means revenge is his obsession isn't simple! lol!
Here in Quebec movie titles change a lot. In the case of The crossing guard, they changed it because there is no equivalent of this expression in french that sounds ok for a movie title,
In fact a crossing guard in french would translate: Le brigadier. I assure you this is a crappy title to sell a movie. L'obsession is much better in this point of view. -
