The missing painting

So what is everyone else's take on the painting that is obviously missing from the wall during the whole piano scene after the mom goes to bed? I think it symbolizes "something" that is supposed to be there but has obviously been removed to hide whatever it was (meaning hiding Marty and Jackie's relationship, however obvious it is). What do you think?

The painting is still hung in the opening sequence, but in 1983 it is gone.
Looks like an impressionist painting, but I can't identify which one. Anyone else?

i thought it was either a family portrait including mr. pascal or a one of just mr. pascal.
it's interesting that he is shown in the painting above the mantle in the flashback at the beginning, but we never see that full-size portrait any other time in the movie. -
